I'd certainly say "Accelerator" by FSOL, every time, and I
mean EVERY TIME I relisten to it, I am suprised by how fresh
and aces it still sounds. Obviously it is of its time, let's
say, but at the same time, it has dated in a way that it
sounds better and better, like a vintage wine... mmmmm,
breathe in their grapes!

Damn. You made me pop my creditcard out of my pocket. The
one FSOL album i hadn't heard...yet. (apart from the papua
single)

@xf: although your question (more a statement) baths in
sarcasm, i'll give a serious answer anyway:
especially with idm it appears to be the artists defining
the category, instead of the music itself. so, if you're
asking for a definition, i'd say it's the artists you can
find in xlts' discography.

what i mean is, how does one define what fits into idm? the
line is getting more and more blurred as more mainstream
artists release songs that definitely are idm'ish. you
could once define it as abstract or obscure electronica, as
it differentiated from your usual 'techno' quite a bit.

what the fuck defines idm exactly? EXCELLENT ELECTRONIC
MUSIC is probably the most accurate description i've seen.
vague!

offline xf from Australia on 2005-11-20 08:01 [#01782980]

ooh, and sawII if it hasn't been mentioned.

what makes this ambient release idm, though? :-)

You can't define what doesn't exist (possibly a
philosophical discussion in there, but that's by the by).
There is no "IDM" music, but there is "Excellent Electronic"
Music. That's how I .... look at ... it.

offline xf from Australia on 2005-11-20 08:40 [#01783020]

right, that's it. next time somebody asks me what sort of
music i like, i'm going to burst out uncontrollably
EXCELLENT ELECTRONIC MUSIC.

yeah that's pretty much how i answer (s/random crap/wierd
shit/ though); it'd be nice to be more direct, though. i
hate the term 'idm'; it always leads to 'what does that
mean', then trying to excuse how shitty the genre name is.

'electronica' usually results in people thinking you're into
doof doof.

whee.
