...seen as 'Black Music', when most of the good/popular
artists are white? Is it because it's roots are in Jungle or
something?

They're not the only ones, it seems the media in general
sees it as black (as if music has any colour) as hiphop.

perhaps because of the very tentative link between dnb and
grime..?

I'm grasping at straws here.

Well, its roots are in ragga, which is from Jamaica, and
those guys mostly have dark skin.

I'd say "The Roots" were more hiphop and less DnB :P I think
it's the most sensible explanation (even though it's a crap
reason).

Qrter: A good point, although as you say, a tenuous link.
I'd say Grime is more strongly linked to Jungle in terms of
the style of breaks and crossover artists though.

No, he's right. I've read it as being assiciated with
"black" music a number of times.

Don't know why, myself.

when i spoke to an "up & coming" dnb dj from new jersey who
was living in CT at the time, he said that dnb was the UK's
hip hop movement (for a weird analogy) - so that's why it
had mc's, and was considered "black" or whatever

i would think its cause of its roots...
i also think drum n bass mc's are fucking pathetic...
i also think drum n bass gets old SUPER fast...

I was suprised to find, at the time, early mid 90s, how many
of the artists I thought were black, for whatever reason,
the media, laziness, turned out to be white.

that's what happened to me when i started listening to white
rap

hence why eminem being white didnt impress me at all

though

same thing for me about reggae : i've already heard some
good one (not bob marley) but can't quote

the terms 'jungle' and 'drum'n'bass' seem to be
interchangeable, but they seem to be the mix between black
and white culture, emerging out of the mix between house and
soul 'breakbeats'

offline DaggerHappy from Australia on 2005-11-16 22:04 [#01779852]

its because dnb is sped up hip hop drums. hip hop people are
often black.

it is kind of weird to see it being associated with hip hop
culture
I don't really appreciate it myself because I enjoy dnb and
dislike being lumped in with white "hip hop" heads

Goldie.
Grooverider.
Fabio.
It's all about the innovators.
White people have picked up on drum and bass since.
And as for this "Is it because of Grime" don't be stupid -
D'n'B predates Grime by about eight years.

Goldie is mixed race...you have also conveniently forgotten
the likes of Doc Scott, 2 Bad Mice, Aphrodite, Micky Finn,
Dom (& Roland), Trace and fucking god knows how many more
white people.

offline swears from junk sleep on 2005-11-17 11:47 [#01780359]

Okay, but you've got to remember that most of the breaks
were from black funk records, most of the the MC's were
black, and it has roots in Reggae and Hip Hop. It couldn't
have happened without that foundation.

offline ecnadniarb on 2005-11-17 11:58 [#01780383]

It also has it's roots in acid and hardcore which is the
scene both Fabio and Grooverider started in which has the
media perception of being a white e's up scene. In fact it
grew up from acid as did happy hardcore which uses many of
the same breaks and is considered a "white scene".

I may be completely wrong but I think The Winstons (the
creators of the Amen break for anyone who doesn't know)
where actually a group consisting of both black and white
members.

the term "garage" comes from.
