I want a laptop

Hi

I know people have posted similar questions before, but I
thought it warranted a new post so that I can give my
specific requirements.

I want a new laptop as I'm giving my girlfriend my old one
(IBM Thinkpad T23).

Basically, I want something either new or second hand from
500 - 900 GBP (the closer to 500 the better). I need
something that I can use for DJing, making music, work,
surfing the net, etc. (I don't play computer games at all,
so no worries there).

I love my Thinkpad's robustness and the fact that it's quite
small and light - I wouldn't want anything less sturdy than
this, and preferably not too much bigger if at all.

I'd want at least 512mb and a DVD burner.

I was also considering a Mac iBook or Powerbook as they're
so nice to use (and they seem good for VJing, something I
want to get into). However, I'm worried that it'll be
difficult to get pirate software for a Mac.

Anyone got any recommendations/advice?

get one with a pentium m processor...... there are plenty of
nice models to choose between..... hp, ibm, dell.... perhaps
acer and toshiba.

Ah! Cheers Phobia.

So is the Pentium M better than Centrino? What are the
advantages of Pentium M over Pentium 4?

Asus has some nice pentium m models. I have a Z71V that is
ace.

The Pentium M (Centrino, NOT just mobile P4) architecture is
fantastic for music making - better support for floating
point math and shorter instruction pipeline. My 1.73 gHz
Centrino lappy runs Reaktor with twice the efficiency of my
desktop 2.4 gHz system. That is, if the same ensemble takes
20% CPU on the 2.4 4P4 it'll take only 10% CPU on the 1.73
lappy.

Don't be fooled by the lower clock speed - Pentium Ms run
circles around P4s.

if you wait a while they may get around to making dual-core
mobile processors.. I'd look around for a while first, as
dual-cores are sweet!

If you want a laptop with a Pentium 4 in it, prepare for a
lot of heat/fan noise.

I have a 2ghz Pentium M in mine. I make music. I have no
complaints.

How do you calculate the equivalent P4 clockspeed for a
Pentium M?

Is a Centrino the same thing as a Pentium M?

pentium m is a part of centrino...... low power consumption
and low heat output.... avoid celeron if possible. also
avoid AMD (imo).... i've seen a few bad ones.........

Cheers :)

Yeah, I'll definitely avoid AMD and Celeron - not v. good at
all.

compaq's are total garbage

i have a t42 thinkpad and its sweet - you can always get a
new drive to put into it to burn dvd's my friend

i would stay away from mac's for two reasons

1) they're hip
2) they're far too expensive for what you get

I want someone to become my sex slave for life and be
willing to do whatever I subject to them and don't complain,
ever!

but we can't always get what we want, unless of course
you're George Bush and the majority of your country are
complete imbeciles.

Yeah man, this Thinkpad I have here has been fantastic and I
am very tempted to go Thinkpad again.

I just want to check all my options first.

Macs are SOOOO nice to use though..... maybe this new
Windows replacement thing will help bridge the gap?

I have a Toshiba Satellite M45

It's pretty dope. It has a big 15.4 inch widescreen. It
runs Ableton Live 4 with no problems. has a DVD burner.
80gig hard drive.

I got it in may this year. My only grip with it thus far is
the Screen. It seems to be "bleaching" out a bit around the
edges. It isn't reall noticable unless i'm watching a
really dark movie or something then it looks like the light
is bleeding through a bit. I bought the extended warranty
though so I'm going to get it fixed.. eventually.. if it
get's bad. I have heard that Tohsiba has shitty customer
service though..

I doubt it's as robust as a thinkpad though, i have a
feeling that my screen problems are from hauling it around
everyday in my laptop bag...? don't know.

anyway, for the money and the features, i'm still very
happy about the purchase.

yeah, so mine is a pentium M centrino chip.

i think it's a 1.6 ghz, which i am told is about equivalent
to a 3ghz Pentium 3. like i said, it runs Ableton without a
hitch. as for battery consumption... i think it gets about
2 hrs on a full charge, which isn't that much better than
P3.
