ok, I'm no economist or anything like that, but (or
therefore).. I can't see the point in stock-exchanges.. what
are they for? are they even necessary?

it's the "global marketplace"

where you purchase everything, but not a physical good, the
rights to a portion of said physical good, OR to a companies
operation

boyeeeeeeeeeee

It serves to allow companies to liquidate assets without
dismantling the infastructure.

partake

yeah, but.. that doesn't make it necessary.. it's a
"made-up" thing and all the people earning money off it
are.. well, they are the only ones who are truly "making
money," aren't they?

no

many companies offer stock as a counter to raises...if you
work for a company that is consistently doing well you stand
to make a LOT more money this way then if you just take a
salary increase - this is why the enron scandle hurt so many
people - they had GREAT company stock options, tons of
employees took them, instead of a raise, and they yanked the
carpet out from under them

think of it like this

they offer you $1 more an hour over a year (this is
hypothetical and way off, but its a rough idea)

$1 x 80hours a per paycheck

x 24 paychecks a year

1x80x24 = 1920 a year raise

but they may give you a stock option instead, if the stock
is doing well there is almost no limit to what you could
make

plus - share-holders (stock shares) have a say in how the
company is run, the ethics, politics, etc etc - its more
than just money...its part of the company...legally

well.. that's still just made up.. they could just give
larger raises then, and with stocks the money don't really
exist, nor is the value a set thing, so getting stocks
instead of a raise.. well.. as you said, with enron, people
lost money.. money that never existed...

no, it exists. the value of the stock is a reflection of
the value of the company which is based on real things like,
assets, growth, profits. it's not just arbitrary.

well, yes, I understand that, but.. it isn't really

just exchanging stock... there are even stock companies
where people can own stock in them... it's totally
completely crazy, obsolete and silly.

the market creates a stimulus for companies to grow and be
successful. they are required to do so or else people will
not invest in them, and the company will have less money to
grow, then people will invest less, the company will have
less money, less growth, less investors... etc etc..
downward spiral, company dies. In fact, a company is
required by law to do everything in it's power to appease
the stockholders who have a legal right to protect their
investment.

you could do well with a combination though in communism you
cant have to blind obedience to or strive for the dollar
which you have in capitalism - it just SEEMS (im not sure as
it has never really worked) that life, as a whole, would be
better for everyone - instead of some people living too well
and others not living well enough

capitalism is supposed to promote this by offering the hopes
of getting to an upper class, but socially you cant have
everyone in the upper class...its impossible

capitalism can even be implemented to do good, for people or
the environment. For example, companies trade pollution
credits which regulate how much they can pollute the air.

so capitalism itself isn't necessarily bad, it's the way it
is practiced that is flawed.

Capitalism is by far the superior system. Communism is
handing control over everything to the state, (while they
pretend it's for the workers) there is no competion, no
incentive to try harder at anything. The only reason China's
economy is growing is because they have allowed private
companies to operate alongside the state. They are not
really a communist country. (True communism has never
existed anywhere anyway). America has become the most
powerful country in the world and outlived the USSR due to
capitalism.
Yes, there are a lot of shitty exploitative companies out
there, but they're nothing compared to the evil things
goverments do. Nike might make people work for 25 cents a
day, but they don't shoot people for wearing glasses.

Really. Surely having the government control every aspect of
your life, and not having the right to set up your own
business if you so wish is for stupid people?

neither system is great, but of communism and capitalism,
communism is superior. they're both stupid, though.

Saying that these systems are "stupid" is reductive and
doesn't really mean anything. You're basically looking at
either having the state manufacture everything in an
inefficient manner, or allowing people to engage in free
enterprise and do as they please.
You can only have one or the other or a mixture of the two.

it means quite a bit, my dear sir; it means that I feel that
both system are inadequate, and that I still don't really
have an alternative of my own.. I'm no fucking
political/economic genious, but it doesn't take much to see
what's wrong with either system.

inventing the alternative, however, I leave up to someone
else, and I don't see no wrong in just pointing out an
error...

oh, and.. just using negative and positive words to describe
either system isn't going to have any impact on the way the
systems work... you're talking about inefficient and "engage
in free enterprise," but that's just your own EXTREMELY
biased way of seeing it, you silly bee.

also, stating that it's a case of "EITHER YOU DO 1 OR YOU DO
2" is the silliest thing ever. that's the same as saying
there are no alternatives; everything is black or white..
ther are probably
100000000090009900908908253098720987532082953098432 more
alternatives, we just don't know them yet.

Every society that has ever existed in the history of
mankind has either been trun by the church/state or had some
form of free enterprise (even if it was swapping a goat for
some fish). Or a combination of either.
If you invented a new system that replaced capitalism it
would be inherently communist because you would have
abolished money. And if you had some sort of system where we
had no state, it would be in some sense, inherently
capitalist and libertarian.
These 100000000090009900908908253098720987532082953098432
"alternatives" you speak about would either involve the
state or private property.

1: what does "trun" mean? I can't find it in any dictionary,
but I'll assume you're using it as something like "ruled".

2: the protestant church is the birthplace of capitalism,
but you seem to be setting these two up as opposites.

3: you're making a false assumption again. just because we
don't know of any other systems, doesn't mean we can't have
one that's not either of the two we know of, and even if the
100000000090009900908908253098720987532082953098432
alternatives involve state or private property, that doesn't
mean they can't be completely different from the ones we
know about.

wake up.

He's saying that the
100000000090009900908908253098720987532082953098432
alternatives would be variations on the themes of state or
private property. It's unlikely that we'll wake up one day
and value animal rights, for example, above all else and
base our systems around that. I don't think he's saying it
couldn't happen, but simply acknowledging the lack of
historical precedent for these systems.

I'm not taking sides by the way. I sure as hell am
unqualified as anyone to pontificate about political
ideology.

yeah, I know what he's saying, and I'm saying that he's
wrong; just because we can't see the systems now, doesn't
mean they aren't there... can you imagine how it is to not
have "time?" no, but that doesn't mean there aren't people
who don't understand or percieve time.
