this may be common knowledge, but, I hear you have to hold a
violin in your chin and strum it with your nosehairs....
might want to start growing them out since you'll be needing
them.

lol :D

while we're on the subject, a friend of my drummer roomate
came over a few weeks ago with his electric violin... he was
pretty damn good on it, and we all jammed out and it was
good times. Other than that I don't really know much about
violin techniques, sorry.

I've never played an electric and I'm very out of practice,
but I used to play a violin. Good move re: not annoying the
neighbours- violins are one of the hardest instruments to
get a nice sound out of and they are probably (bagpipes
aside) the worst sounding when played by a beginner. At that
price I could be tempted to take it back up. Teaching
yourself, if you taught yourself guitar, shouldn't be a
problem. I was formally taught for 2 hours a week for 2
years and I honestly don't remember much teaching bar "this
is the X string and your finger here makes Y note". Only
thing I can think of is practice your bowing a hell of a
lot. Whereas plucking a guitar has only got a bit of
variation (comparatively speaking) and the fingering for
chords is the hardest thing as a beginner, violin I'd say is
the opposite. Fingering is easy, but bowing can be a
nightmare. As well as getting smooth strokes, using the
whole bow and getting used to playing up and down and things
like 2 up strokes in quick succession with no down stroke in
between, you have to be careful when playing the middle 2
strings not to accidentally touch one of the adjacent
strings at the same time.

Also, if you already play guitar, you should have a good
laugh playing pizzicato. :)

Let us know how you get on.

cheers dude most helpful, i tried a violin once years ago
and bowing wa sinfact a BITCH. its really hard not to get
that intense screeching sound that sounds like cats being
tied to gether gutted en mass and then rapped by a fat ugly
man cat. Anyhow i really wnat to learn so that i can
eventually persuade my self to fork out for a viola, plus
for the band im hoping to start it will be VERY handy
playing violin. i can see myself spending the first month
not even fretting anything and just working on the bowing,
im really looking forward to it though, i love learning new
instruments. I only wish i could get real lessons for piano
as i kinda hit a brick wall there.

If you can get a Viola rather than a violin. I found it
easier to play because I have fat fingers. I wouldn't get an
electric right away see if you can pick up a cheap
traditional one first to see if you like it.

its more about monetary constraints and teh plug in ability
fo an electric one is far useful, i know i wanna learn and
im not expecting an awsome sounding violin just enough to
kick some ass and shred cowboys form hell on the ole
fiddle. plus the quietness of non real thing would be handy
as hell

I don't know much about violin, but if you paint that gold,
and do some instrumental rap live, you need to wear that on
a chain around your neck, so when you play it, you can look
all cool and underground. Its the kind of thing that shouts
"Old school" but also shouts "fuck you". The kids should
love it.

Let me know what the sound quality is like. I'm giving
serious consideration to getting one of them for xmas. At
long last (3 years now) I'll be able to do my string based
track "Vanilla Hub" as a 3 part violin track. Score!

it arrived today, i bought the acoustic one (that is a wierd
thing to say). its awsome for the very little money and im
amazed i can play scales after only 5 minutes playing around
(the C scale that is), admittedly they dont sound beautiful
but they are by no means screeches of death. The amount of
rosin is confusing as i had no idea what to do with it, i
roughed it up with a knife and stuck some on till i got a
tone i think i might need to buy a shoulder rest as its a
lil uncomfortable. the oddness is the reveresed guitar
tuning. Instead of E A D G its G D A E so when playing i
have to think of it like an upside down guitar with the
strings going UP octaves. Hopefully after practicing for a
few months ill get a much sweeter tone and more sure on the
exact fingerings of notes. Applying vibrato is damn awkward
as you cant do it like you do on a guitar. im hoping i can
come up with some really simple accompniments soon to
record. Im by no means any good its simple up and down slow
bowing and changing strings is slow but im glad my guitar
playing as enabled me to understand it alot more than just
picking one up with no idea of stringed instruments. The bow
tension is a lil unsettling im going about a pinky's width
not to tight but with a bit of bounce (i read its not
supposed to be too tight) also i keep detensing the bow
everytime i put it away

hopefully if all goes well ill be able to record the album
ive been wanting to do for ages without having to use edirol
orchestral. A Silver Mt Zion look out ;)

Electric violins are really cool. Real ones suck.
I used to play the violin but at the start of this school
year, I moved over to drums. Now I'm having loads more fun.

Sounds like you need to get the bow re-haired. Rosin helps
the hair to become erect but it sounds like your hair is
beyond flacid 8 (

its a brand new bow?
the tension seems ok and its fine after applying rosin
again just seems mad applying it so often as everywhere ive
read suggests
maybe its to do with me slacking the bow everytime i finish
playing

No, my bird does and I'm trying to make her answer in plain
english what I should say! Now she's saying you should take
the bow back to where you bought it from and ask them. To
be honest I think she's fobbing me off and wants to talk
rubbish to her friends on the phone.
