'In Ear' Headphones

please can you recommend me some in ear headphones. does
anyone use these, or do you just use those posh ones that
look really stupid if you see someone on a train with them
on? anyway i need some new 'uns 'cause my other cheapo ones
broke. anywhere around the £20 mark is fine.

Does the sound quality differ from studio style headphones?

I really don't like this kind! I think my ears are shaped
incorrectly; in-ear headphones always fall out.

I dont use them anymore. I hate having speakers that close
to my ear drums, i did used them for way too long...

I like them quite a lot. I've had two pairs, some sony crap
(~$35, had a cheap cord which broke. sound quality good
except bass emphasized.. ah well), and now I have a pair of
shure e2 headphones, which are pretty nice. I've heard that
their quality is supposed to be around that of good $100+
headsets (coming from friends whose ears I trust), so I
don't mind the $70 price tag.

It's definitely very nice being able to seal off the world..
and no noise cancelling systems suck whenever I check.

same with me - i can never get them to stay in. :/

there are a few ways to get them to stay in.. the asshole
response of course is to buy a better set or replacement
plugs. Good ones have a plastic tube and the soft part on
that, not just the soft part (like my old sonys), and hence
fit rather snugly and securely.

Anyway alternatively you can use a clip to pin the top of
the cord to your shirt.. some come with this now. that way
the weight of the majority of the cord (and possibly snags
from walking, etc) does not kick their ass.

I'm a big fan of this style of headphone, if you can't tell.

Get some Sennheiser MX-500s. Should be able to get them for
under £25 and they're far and away the best 'in-ear' ones
for the money that I've used. Unless you want to pay silly
money for some custom made Shures, you won't get much
better. A few tarts reckon Sony/Panasonic's equivalents are
better, but we know that that's because they're swayed by
the pretty aesthetics/brand name, rather than sound
quality/reliability, etc.

I'm with you that in ear is the way to go when in public.
Wearing over ear ones anywhere other than home makes you
look a poser IMO. Although I concede some people (Mimi and
my gf for example) do it because they have very small ear
cannals.

You can get an ear doctor to make you custom plugs, it's not
too expensive.

Sennheiser. Decent stuff.

It also depends on your purpose actually. Like I need very
small in ear headphones for speedcycling to reduce the
airflow.

Sony MDR-EX51LP is the perfect in ear headphone for me. They
fit like a glove and don't fall out easily.

Sony's first closed-type Fontopia® design reduces
outside noise for high-intensity listening, helping to
generate powerful, resonant bass response. So exercise,
dance, or skate with the new Fontopia® Headphones.
Featuring a Super-light in-the-ear Design for a snug,
comfortable fit inside the ear - eliminating the headband,
Super-small 9 mm Drivers, and Soft, Silicon Earbuds, these
headphones were created to enhance your on-the-go listening.
Two sizes of earbuds are also included. So move to your
music with the Fontopia® Headphones.

Yep, they come in black, white, and (as I have) metallic
blue.

Earthleakeage, I came across these Bargain MX-500s. £16.95,
with free P&P. Trust me, these are the ones to go for.

were. the assistant pointed to a display cabinet and said
'in ear' (in here)

I use the Sony MDR-EX71SL. I like them, and I think that
they are good.

I have the expensive etymotics. They are incredible.
Analogue synths tend to distort so I lower the volume, but
other than that they are too good to be true. I want to get
ear molds made so it's easier to pop them in. The squishy
ear plugs are kind of a pain to have to do everytime you
want to listen to music. But you sure get insane isolation
and the sound on the er-4's is stunning.

i have some sennheiser PX-100's, they're not in ear but they
look well cheap so i don't have to worry about being mugged
by headphone lovers

thanx to everyone. ceri, ill go for those, £17 is about
what i wanted to spend, look forward to getting them. you're
still young-ish so your hearing won't be too fucked just
yet.

ceri, you should get on the sennheiser payroll, i ordered a
pair of those headphones as well. soon i'll no longer to
use the excuse "but my headphones sound like shit, so what
do i know?" when i'm reviewing xltronic music spams.

Plaidzebra: Ha ha. I'm considering a second pair myself at
that price.

Leftblank: I use MX-500s on my work PC because in spite of
them being rockin' they look cheap, so there's no danger of
the cleaners nicking them.

Earthleakeage: Let us know if you like them.

how good are the MX500's in comparison to the sony
MDR-EX71SL?

offline Ceri JC from Jefferson City (United States) on 2005-11-04 04:21 [#01769423]
Points: 23533 Status: Moderator | Show recordbag

I've not used them, but based on the user reviews the
MDR-EX71SLs get 3-3.5 stars, whereas the MX500s are 4.5
stars.

I do like the idea of the sound elimination though. I want
some in ears headphones like that for on my bike.

wouldn't you consider that a trifle dangerous? or don't you
live in bristol anymore? the driving there is undoubtedly
the worst i've ever seen.

It is slightly dangerous, but I normally ride with earplugs
in, as without them the engine/wind noise is distracting and
over time can damage your hearing, so having music on isn't
that much worse. I'm in Cirencester now, so there's a fair
bit less traffic (apart from when I venture south into
Swine-don). However, whilst I no longer encounter as many
mothers in Chelsea tractors running little Johnny the 500
yards to his public school, there are instead suicidal
children and animals who insist on running into my path at
every opportunity.

did you know they'd brought out a female version of sat-nav?
if you miss a turning or deliberately ignore its
instructions it says "oh... go where you want"

put them in your mouth and yawn.. it works. it will sound
like the music comes from inside your head instead of
outside and into you head.

Does it say "left here" when you're 5 foot away from a
junction and doing 50, and does it say, "no the other right"
after you follow its (incorrect) instructions? Also, on
longer journeys, does it break down in tears and say, "look
lets just pull over and ask someone"?
