it seems that there are less and less of them, being
replaced by mp3 players...

i hope they won't totally disappear, that would kinda piss
me off. : |

wise move.

mine's still working well (it's only 3 years old), but i
know it won't last forever... and i use it as a "main" cd
player...

It's quite normal anyway, look the mp3 players / Ipods now,
the are continuously improving and developing with more
features and stuff, like the possibility to show photos etc.
It's clear that the people prefer them to portable cd
players.

cd's for home mp3's for on the jog

cd players skip when you run, they use more battery and
carrying lots of cd's out and about with you is impractical.
However at home mp3 players are no good cos cds are much
better with thier pretty cases and liner notes and they look
good piled accross one entire wall of your living room

I still use a CD walkman thing. On journeys I like listening
to entire albums rather then various tracks, and I can't be
arsed to MP3 the CDs I have.

my player is cd-r/cd-rw/mp3 one. i use it for listening to
the slsk stuff and the tracks i make. i like
multi-functional devices.

if it could also play tapes, it would be very very NICE.

This is over the last 14 years or so. At the begining they
would only last about 6 months and I would send them back
and get a new one.

I keep thinking how my children (hypothetical)will laugh
when i show them my collection of large, round discs with
funny pictures on them, as I used to laugh at my mum's Abba
vinyls.

THey don't need more batteries. Most modern CD players have
those flat ones that last like 50+ hours.

And they can last like 100 hours if you only listen to
MP3'ed CD's. Fuck Ipods and their 10 hour battery life.

next time you are in Subway/Starbucks/whatever, buy a giant
cookie and put it in your pocket. keep it there for the rest
of the day. i'd be very suprised if you don't find it an
awkward size and annoying shape, and you probably will wish
you hadn't bought it by the end of the day.

Giant... cookie?

I still don't have an MP3 player, my discman does the job
since I spend precious little time listening to music away
from my computer. I still make and listen to cassettes when
I'm in the car, too. If Santa's reading this, I don't mean
to imply I don't want an MP3 player. Just so you know.

really dodgy second hand portable cd players make a good
replacement for broken cd players in your stereo.

because you don't have to move them, which is the most
common problem with older players, that if you move them
they skip

Agreed, I use an old, slightly battered mp3 cd player with
one of these:
cheapo amp
for my home system.

They're also useful when DJing/playing live, particularly on
a laptop, as you can plug them into the mixer to allow the
playing of an emergency track if the hardware/lappy crashes,
to buy you time to get it all going again.

I disagree that portable CD players (particularly ones that
don't take mp3cds or cd-rs) are a viable alternative to tape
walkmen/mp3s. Anti-skip has improved a lot over the years,
but it seems to "go off" over time and become less
effective. I had quite a flash panasonic one that allegedly
had 2 minutes anti-shock on it. A sprint for a bus lasting
just over a minute had it sounding like an Oval track for
about 20 seconds.

There's also the issue of portability. The shape/size is far
from ideal, carrying a caselogic round with you to carry
extra CDs adds to the total bulk of it too. As soon as I got
my first mp3 player (32mb) I gave my CD player to a mate as
I just wasn't using it anymore.

I like my MP3-CD player. I don't think I would want to buy
one of those mini mp3 players. Too many tiny moving parts so
to speak.

i got a good one the other day, plays mp3 and cdr's which is
nice, not a fan of mp3 players at the mo, but then i didn't
start buy cd's till the braindance cd came out :)

i'm a proper vinyl junky, all the afx track i have are on
vinyl :)

i still use an mp3 discman. I'm saving up for an mp3 player
though, yet something tells me the discman will be missed.

This whole technical evolution is shitty in a way, but i
cant help moving along with it..
