I know there are one or two MPC1k users around here. Well, it seems Akai has found it in their hearts to add nearly twice as much functionality to the 1k. Now you can autochop samples and quick assign them. They added LFO's, Timestretching and pitch shifting (doing one or the other without having to effect both), real-time automations of Mixer settings, sample reverse, a delay effect, and a whole bunch of other stuff. And you can finally change the position of a recorded note without having to copy/paste/delete. Interestingly enough, this is a couple weeks after they finally drop the MPC2500 on everybodies heads, and this upgrade nearly brings them alongside eachother (and the 1k is still going to be $800 cheaper).

It was announced on tuesday, and the ETA was 2 weeks. Be prepared to look around tho. The link I provided will have a download location as soon as its announced.
Taffmonster: MPC1k's are great. I am loving mine. You can get a used one for about $800can (so about 500lbs <-I don't have a pound key on my computer.)
(No... wait a second, I do.)
So It will cost you about #500
Its well worth it. Sounds awesome, its fun to work with. A short learning curve too. Just remember, holding shift and then pressing the right or left cursor raises and lowers the time incriment for editing... just so it doesn't take you hours to do your data entry.

is the MPC 1000 as user UNfriendly as the 4000? i work with a 4000, and although it's a great machine, it's hard to get into. also, OS-updates for the 4000 are sparse and they still have a lot to do OSwise....

I don't know what you mean by unfriendly. I find the 1k quite usefull and intuitive. Plus, whenever you do something and it give you a warning (like deleting a sample) it has a cute japanese character on the screen.
But I haven't used a 4k before, so it could be. I find the 1k friendly.
But yeah. User updates are sparse. But this one seems good. The last update before this was 1.07, and this is the v2 update.
Ranjiv: tenative date is november 3rd.

Alright. Its on. Finally out, and it works beautifully. There are even links from the effects window to the mixer window so you don't need to wear out your mode button.
I haven't had a chance to play with the chopshop yet, but thats comming.

Yeah. And the pitch change/tempo change can be smooth or granular. Its really amazing, all the things that you can do with this thing that you couldn't before. They pretty much fixed every single thing that bugged me before (including integrating a fast sample preview feature). I don't even feel the need to use my computer to do dsp anymore. And the all black looks really sexy.
blobula: I sometimes use that for vocal samples. But I also have a sampler in my kaos pad, and it can do the start sample thing as well.

The one thing that hardware has over software, aside from the stability, the interface, the sound and the routing options, is the fact that you never hear software only users pillowtalking their instruments. ;P

Could I sequence a whole track on this thing. What would be the typically use of it? I'm a complete novice when it comes to MPCs. I know you can use it to program drums, but I'm guessing it can do more (and I don't mean sample edit capability).
I mainly use my ancient cubase vst/32 from 97ish vintage, but often find that trying to compose and record new midi stuff in it really kills my enthusiasm quickly. Its great once the bulk of the notes, etc are recorded and need re-arranging and properly recording, but for the initial composition stage I think maybe this would be better.
I use ak.sys to communicate with my S5000, can I now use it with the MPC1000?

Yes, you can sequence whole songs. You can sequence smaller sequences of different tempos, lengths and time signatures and then arrange them all in the song view. It also has a note edit view that looks kind of like an old tracker.
Unfortunately, as far as I know, the only communication you would have with your s5000 would be midi (keep in mind I don't really know much about the s5000).
And now that they have the chop shop feature, you can cut up a sample into as much as 16 different parts and save them as their own waves.
Seriously, there are twice as many features added into this already extremely usefull tool. My five main tools right now (in order of usefullness): MPC 1000, SH32, Evolver, KP2, Alesis quadraverb GT.

Somewhere I said that you can chop a sample into up to 16 different parts. I was wrong, you can do it up to 64 parts. That makes it just as usefull if not moreso than recycle (seeing as its best to avoid autochopping more than 30 samples, due to how long they take to deal with). That makes the chopping feature doubleplus good.

I tried updating the os but all that comes out is a constant buzz when I press play and where the velocity pad thing is there are question marks?
is it anything to do with this "After upgrading, it may be necessary to format your internal hard drive.
Please make sure to back up all contents of the internal hard drive
BEFORE upgrading the OS"

I don't know... My update went smoothly. I know that when you upgrade it, the CF card that you are using should be totally empty of anything but the new os. Maybe you should try reupdating it.
Do you have an internal hd on your mpc1K? Maybe you should back it up and reformat it.

No problem. Hopefully that works out for you. If not, there are the MPC forums. For the most part their pretty nice and extremely knowledgable, and no matter what the problems are, someone there has had it and someone else has a solution.

Nothing on my computer that might give you an example that I could upload anywhere. But I can describe it to you.
Its pretty much what I would call a staple synthesizer. Its not something that you might use to draw someones attention, but its really good for making a wide range of different classic sounds, including a great emulation of the tb303 and a lot of those classic synthy string and choral sections. It has a filter that can scream, it has something like 15 different variations of all the classic wavforms and 30 different kind of spectral wavforms (the spectral wavforms are great for glitchy kind of pads). Plus its really simply laid out, and you never have to question the hows of any of the basic functions (unlike a lot of the other synths that I have)
For the price that it goes for nowadays (around $200), I would definately say its money/value ratio is equal to that of the evolver (which kicks ass for a $550 synth).

thanks for the description. I didn't expect it to talk to the S5000, but rather to the PC. ak.sys lets you drag and drop programs and samples to/from the S5000 to PC and lets you edit as well, quite nifty. I wondered if ak.sys supported MPC1k, but probably not from the sounds of it.
Can the MPC play sounds and record/sample at the same time, so could i set it to record, hit one of the pads and it would record the sound if I looped the audio back?
What is the display like? can you see it from most angles or do you have to position in carefully?
I am sorely tempted to spend some money and get one of these now. I would love to get this lined up with the evolver and SP303. That would rock!

Yes. As far as I know, its one of the only sequencersamplers that let you play audio and record overtop of a sequence that is being played (you only get a minute of recording with the basic ammount of ram, but it can be upgraded cheaply).
What the MPC1k has is 3 stereo output channels and 1 stereo input channel. What you can do when you are running beats through a KP2 or some other effect and you want to sample and chop up the outcome, is just connect the KP2 to the secondary output channel (1+2), then connect he KP2 back to the recording channel. Press play, and record. Unless you tell it to, the machine won't record untill it hears audio... so you dont need to worry about your loop being difficult to sync.

argh! now I will spend money on more boxes with knobs!!! Recording and playing is the best feature ever! My roland SP303 phrase sampler can do it, its called resample, and that is very good for recording one of its sampled sounds with effects, since you can only use 1 fx at a time. so you can layer them up.
Thanks for the info, I will be sure to get one of these, but I must get some new decks first! After I get my 1210 mk3s I will get this baby for sure!
I was actually quite interested in it from the first review of it in sound on sound, but now with the new os and decent paint job I am almost certainly going to get it.
But what about the screen? Is it easy to see? Is there a backlight? Is it any good? Does it need the unit to be angled? This is my only cause for concern because it is immovable, unlike 2000s. thanks

Well, I have seen people work around the angle of the screen (one of the only drawbacks). Pretty much, people just put things under the back and stabalize the front. Not a problem for me, because my chair is higher than normal, so I kind of tower over it.
The screen is very easy to read, and all you need to do to lighten or darken it is hold shift and turn the data knob. Its also laid out in such an easy fashion, that you only need to consult the manual a couple times, and you don't really have to after that. A couple functions are somewhat hidden (you have to move the cursor over the number or option and press the window key), but they are few, and it doesn't interfere with the operation or slow you down.
The way I see it (and this is my last sales pitch for tonight), is if both my computer and my mpc were stolen at the same time, I would replace the mpc first.

it was to complicated to sell it here and from here, and sx is more valued on ebay now, 2k price is coming down, and i couldn't work on it because of that zip drive & 1k OS bug in my mind. sx iz crazy, more like synth than sampler, i like the fact that finally i can have any sample immediately transposed on "keyboard"...
