You stand at the platform waiting head down, only looking
up to look at the clock that counts much slower than it
feels like it should. Nobody smiles, nobody looks at
eachother unles sthey allready arrived in a group. White
headphone cables dangle revealing the ipod generation who
sit listening to thier mp3's and txting on thier phones.

You sit on the train and you try as hard as possible to sit
alone, seats to yourself, pretending to be self absorbed as
you gaze wondering out of the window, when infact you would
much rather actually have an encounter with someone. Id like
to be able to actually sit next to a stranger and start up a
conversation about the weather or inevitible isolation of
the world.

some might say the reason no one seems to really talk much
is because we value our privacy, i dont think thats true
because if that was the case we would complain that banks
know where we shop, what we buy and what brand of tea we
drink.

Today i had a cap on and got the distinct impression that
people thought i was a hoodlum, the odd distasteful glance
or shuffling out of my way, maybe its this idea that
everybody else who isnt a friend to us is out to
hurt/steal/opress us. when infact we are all alone together.
Either that or im paranoid (which is highly likely)

maybe its just my own inability to talk to strangers however
it does seem that its a common case.

why not, when your next travelling by train, strike up a
conversation, share a passing smile anything other than the
souless dredge of head down closed off self.

sorry bout that felt like ranting, kinda wanted it to come
out better than that but it will do hehe!

i have no ipod nor walkman and i personnaly HATE when people
use them on train, because i like to discuss a bit with
people ; twice i met a nice girl on a train, because i
luckily was sitting next to her, but of course it leads to
nothing except just chatting because they didn't go to the
same town...

hey thats really cool, i wish i could do that, but most are
texting, iPod-ing (is that a word) or plain being non
talkers.

i guess its mainly down to my own lack of confidence to just
go sit next to some one and say HEY

i've never been on a train trip, except once in fifth grade
on this tourist train crap thing.

i'm not sure that we have many passenger rails here in
texas.

the real interest in discussing that way is that the girl
can't go away until her station, so you usually can
really have a nice discussion that you couldn't have in
parties or whatever when she could pretend she has to go !
but i always wait a little before talking to someone in the
train, not to appear to be a burden
btw everytime people read in a train, i'm sure they would
prefer discussing ! don't think you'll disturb them, i'm
sure you won't at all !

The LAST thing I'd want being stuck in a place I couldn't
leave is being badgered by some student just wanting to talk
about the weather. The reason most people don't talk to each
other is becuase THEY DON'T FUCKING WANT TO. Why does this
myth prevail that everyone's secretly wishing we could all
just get along and have a mass natter? Fucking hell, hey,
that was a shame the train got stuck for five hours, but
making small talk about the "inevitability of world
isolation" with some dwarf in a cap made the time FLY BY.

i tend to read because i hvae nothing esle to do. I mean you
can tell if you are disturbing someone from the word hello,
its always clear in someones face when they dont want to
talk to you, but people on trains have a real "guarded"
sense about them more than in most other social situations.

The people that tend to talk to you on the train are usually
a bit mental.

that's true : you can know if people want to speak to you by
just saying "hello" when you sit next to him/her
an other interesting fact is that some people can speak a
lot more on a train than they would usually because they are
practically sure not to see again again ! (except on a usual
traject)

you, Mr, have become whats known as a cynic lol.

I know people just dont want to talk, thats the whole point
of this thread, i personally (i have to be clear that this
is MY opinion, as you have made it clear recently that you
have a real distatse for me) think people should talk more.
Its just an observation, not because I am a student, because
i like talking to people. I wouldnt badger anybody, im not
inept at realising when my conversation is not wanted!

Taff, I took great pleasure in reading that opening post.
It's something I think about often. Last week when I took
the train this pretty hot girl said "Do you mind if I sit
here?" and because Mr Funk was doing his best to prevent me
hearing anything in the outside world I said "Yes". Luckily
she sat down there anyway, that could have been embarassing.
Of course, I descended back into the realm of fine
breakbeat, but it left me wondering, what would she have had
to say if I wasn't the unconfident bastard that I am.

yo taff, just make a passing comment to someone tomorrow,
about anything, the weather, the train, the look of disdain
in everyone's eyes. the weirdos that wanna be left alone.
crack a joke, doesnt matter if its shit, a smile goes a long
way. smiling is infectous. try it. smile at someone. i bet
they smile back. even if they give you a bemused look, who
cares... if they start talking back, cool. if they give you
a weird look; give a shit? nahhhhh.

you'll find more often than not most people are decent

Its only on trains i feel liek im forced to be silent and

When travelling by train I like to listen to music on the
walkman because it gives me a nice feeling of isolation and
being disconnected from reality. Which is nice once in a
while. Usually my journeys take me from here to Newark which
typically involves the Carlisle-Settle line (quite a lovely
journey really) untill Leeds and then on to Newark (which is
far less exciting - especially as it often ends with me
dying for a wazz cos I refuse to go on the train).
I don't like to talk to people because I'm not really very
good at it.

What's worse than a train ride next to a chatty lady with
coffee breath? A nine our flight next to a chatty lady with
coffee breath, that’s what. That lady had some of the
most hackneyed ideas I've ever heard, god she thought she
was so fucking new-wave. Yes, I live in Maine, how curious,
how novel, no I don’t subscribe to Bullshit Magazine and
no that article is not interesting at all. Would you, lady,
please breath on the woman that gives a shit. Can't you see
I'm a spiteful youth with almost no social skill?

You ever done an overnight journey ineurope on the cheap. I
have spent roughly24 hours travelling by train before. that
is truly rubbish. Primarily because at night you can
obviously see nothing out of the windows. That takes any of
the fun out of travelling by train.
