Do you think that an album that you don't like when you hear it for the first time can become an album that you'll llove later, or at the contrary do you only trust your first impression ?
I think I believe in growers !

definitely. the last three autechre albums have been like that for me. in that case, i think the reason is that it takes a bit to sort of get the off-kilter rhythms into my head, and then once they're internalized to a certain extent and i can kind of anticipate them as they come, it's easier to follow each part and see how they interact in the piece, which is one ofthe coolest things about their music.

Yeah, Drukqs was a grower for me. Couldn't really get into it at first, now it's my favorite "electronic music" album.

i never believe my first impressions.
so of course i "believe" in growers... but to some extent; since i'm discovering new music often, i won't bother giving an fifty unenjoyable listens before i get to eventually kind of like it. usually i think i can hear whenever an album has "potential" for me or not. for example if i have problems with the singer's voice, i will keep trying, i usually get used to voices i don't like at first. if it sounds weird, i will keep trying too. but if sounds plain annoying and/or really "shallow" to me, chances are i won't give it another try.
what annoys me is that i never know whatsoever, when i love an album, whether i will eventually get bored of it or not; and it's a shame when you used to really love an album and it doesn't affect you the way it used to anymore... : /

what happens to me with Autechre (since it's the band everyone always mentions here when people talk about growers...) is that i like it or not depending on my state of mind/mood; not depending on how many times i have listened to it before. same with Medúlla by Björk, for example.
and when i'm used to an artist's particular sound, i barely need any "adaptation time" (or a very little one) to appreciate another record by the same artist... unless it's very different...

I think there has to be a hook of one kind or another to get me to listen to an unsatisfactory album. When I say hook, I mean a riff, a clever melody etc. Albums that are immidiatly accesable can get tiresome after a while, I still can't listen to OK Computer all the way through without getting bored because I know what is coming next.

usually the growers have the most staying power
whereas the ones that i like immediately tend to be disposable.
except for something like richard d. james album, which i initially crapped my pants, and now i crap my pants even harder. so it's still growing and making me crap my pants.

I believe in growers to som extent but I don't believe that you should spend too much time listening to something that you really don't like at first listens.
I hate when i hear this "I've listened to confield 10 times and it still hasn't clicked but I'm sure it will after a few more listens". Have those individuals considered the fact that they might not like the album no matter how often they give it a try? That doesn't mean it's a bad album or that people dont "get it" or they have bad taste in music. It's just a matter of different taste.
I like a lot ae has done, for example, but there are some songs that i really dislike. I haven't listened to Untilted through so I can't give my opinion on that but I really disliked most about Draft. I "get it". I just don't like it. Technically it's interesting but sometimes I feel like it's like they're taking part in some programming competition.

for me growers are about having a certain quality that is hard to connect with at first....
a good grower will present something thta is often quite subtle that throws the listener off kilter when they first hear it
when their head gets used to identifying the patterns in the track - again often subtle patterns - these become more meaningful and potentially pleasureable
my favourite growers involve me tuning into an undercurrent within the track and just daydreaming on and around what the artist has doen with that sound/pattern :)

In reality RDJ is taking over your mind as you listen to them.
