"Samples from the island are being sent to the UK

to check for the H5N1 strain of bird flu that can be fatal
to humans.

And British scientists are on their way to the Far East to
help develop a global strategy to fight the bug.

Earlier, Chief Medical Officer Sir Liam Donaldson warned
that a Europe-wide pandemic is "inevitable".

He said 50,000 people would probably die in the UK in the
winter of 2006-7 - but a final figure of up to 750,000 was
"not impossible".“

I think that's the case for the HN51 strain that's already
been bumping people off, the real problem is going to be if
the virus mutates into a more easily transmissible (i.e.
person-to-person) form.

as long as you are thoroughly cooking poultry, there is no
chance of getting avian flu from eating birds.

These health scares never amount to much. Ecoli? Pfft 100
odd people ill, a dozen dead. Big deal; yes it's sad if you
are close to one of them, but over a whole country it's
negligible, far more die of regular flu.

yet again from the BBC:

"Q: How do humans catch bird flu?

Bird flu was thought only to infect birds until the first
human cases were seen in Hong Kong in 1997.

Humans catch the disease through close contact with live
infected birds.

Birds excrete the virus in their faeces, which dries and
becomes pulverised, and is then inhaled.

Symptoms are similar to other types of flu - fever, malaise,
sore throats and coughs. People can also develop
conjunctivitis.

Researchers are now concerned because scientists studying a
case in Vietnam found the virus can affect all parts of the
body, not just the lungs.

This could mean that many illnesses, and even deaths,
thought to have been caused by something else, may have been
due to the bird flu virus."

it isn't very dangerous at the moment - if the flu virus
combines with a human flu virus - that's when the
bird shit will hit the fan.
