How do you shot web? I've been trying to synthesize the ultimate kick - well to my ears andyways - and I found this and this article from Sound on Sound extremely helpful.
If you have other bass kick tips post 'em here and we'll shift the earth a few inches to the left.

I agree, drums are much harder than pads. Leads are maybe easiest.
Making a nice meaty melodic patch for basslines is also difficult.

drums are easy to make except for cymbals.
kick drums are fairly intuitive, just a low frequency (with drop) with proper decay/release! that's the cliché one anyway.

That's what I thought, then I read the SOS articles and put together something that used a triangle oscillator, a touch of saw for growl, a frequency shifter to make the overtones enharmonic, a lowpass filter, and a noise generator for the click. Plus some envelopes. Next I'm gonna try putting a bandpass on the noise component.

I just use a sine wave and volume envelope...

Yeah, more advanced techniques are also interesting, but you should always start out with the rough ones to learn the basic jist (sp?) of it.

compression and eq! i try to reference other material to keep my samples in the ballpark eq wise, sometime there's way too much bass or no clarity.

I've read those articles at SOS and they really do help you understand the diffrent sounds going on in the drums. I take a couple of synths and try to synthesize the diffrent elements ie. the noise click, bass sine, and layer them up. Then i do some eq and compression and put some reverb and it sounds rather convincing (exept for cymbals that is).
