For someone who is an Aphex fan, who has wanted to get into
them but has not known where to start?

Always welcome, but remeber, back in the 70's the were the
ones experimenting with electronic percussions and Moogs,
Arp, and all those wonderful analog synths, don't expect to
sound like todays electronica music, but definitely soooo
goood :) And worth the respect to all they were doing back
then.

Concert Classics is a charmer and Radio Activity is
sinister. Try to get a hold of the german versions. I think
Kraftwerk should be enjoyed in their native language,

I'm a 1000000% with you Vlari, thanx for pointing that out.
I have all their releases in German :) Still looking for
their Minimum-Maximum german version. Have that one but
their comercial-regular version.

To the original poster - Don't buy The Mix first - all the
tracks on The Mix are new versions from the early 90's - you
should get the original albums (and any serious electronic
music fan should own EVERY Kraftwerk album) to appreciate
why they are so revered.

I'd recommend listening in chronological order, starting
right back at Kraftwerk 1 from 1970. Or even the
pre-Kraftwerk Organisation album (1969). Radioactivity
(1975) is the first Kraftwerk album that is purely
electronic i.e no woodwind, live drums or guitars

By the time you get to Computer World (1981, and by far
their most technologically advanced album) you will
literally be on your knees grovelling at the feet of the
innovators of electronic music, just like the rest of us.

yeah, i started with the mix cos i didnt know it was remixed
stuff.
except when i heard pocket calculator (the reason i bought
the mix) i was like 'WTF, no, this is wrong!'
i thought got computer world and man-machine. those two are
short so you can easily listen to em together, and that
right there is alot of awesome kraftwerk : D

"all the tracks on The Mix are new versions from the
early 90's"

That's why it's one of the best releases that can be used to
make an intermediate stop when traveling back in time.

kraftwerk made fantastic music back then, it has a kind of
pure and innocent vibe to it
and i LOVE the earlier stuff with flutes and live drumming
:D sounds sooo bizarre and beautiful

for a laugh also check señor coconut - el baile alemán,
for latin versions of classic kraftwerk, very bizarre yet
entertaining and skillfully done
and one of the very best album cover out there ^^

The ones that I started with were Man Machine, Trans Europe
Express and Computer World. I think those are their three
most accessible albums for a newcomer. If you like those
three, then dive into their back catalogue head first, it's
all good.

The Telephone Call actually has fairly good lyrics. it could
pass as a normal prog rock style song.

few of they're tunes. I just wouldn't be listening to them.

Computer world and
Man Machine

are both the least cheesy most influential sounding
electronic releases they did.

a lot of their early works were more krautrock leaning, ralf
and florian, tonefloat and the ones with the traffic cones
are all mostly non electronic.

Radioactivityt and Autobhan are two good records as well,
but they are more like a bridging of the gap between their
krautrock sound and the electronic computer music they
became famous for.

The Mix & electric cafe is when they started picking up
influences from other 80s electronic and synth artists. they
are still good but i wait until much later to check those
out

Trans Europe Express
The Robots
Spacelab
Metropolis
The Model
Neon Lights
The Man Machine
Computer World
Numbers
Computer Love

And yes, I know I just listed the entire Man Machine LP. But
lets face it, every track on there is a classic.

i first listened to The Mix and later liked it a lot more
than original older versions.
Tour De France from 2000-something.

also tracks: Antenna, Etherwellen, Ohm Sweet Ohm.

search youtube for old prog-rock hippy Kraftwerk live vids.
Air's song Sexy Boy is about Ralf Hutter with long hair, i
think now.
