I'm pretty sure of this.

Why so sure?... I can't help feeling it would have surfaced
in some form by now...

Only four copies exists to my knowledge. Given out to
trusted people.

Arn't you confusing this with CAT023, phobia?... the Caustic
Window LP that never got released...

I feel it doesn't exist. Nobody knows MP3's on the net. Many
people in the recent past claimed to have it on MP3 while
after downloading, you hear immediatly they are fake. People
who are claiming that they own the record have always
different (thus false) descriptions.

If there are just 4 copies around, it's pretty obvious that
there ain't no MP3s. There have been some stories around
this record... like Grant "lost" his copy.

There are just 4 copies of the Caustic Window Album, but it
is not known how much copies there are in existance for the
Q-Chastic EP, probably 100 or something.

I doubt this record exists. I mean, even Richard James
doen't have a copy of it. Anyway, I think James just does
these little things for a laugh, building up huge interest
in records which don't even exist.

I agree, it's the old Aphex/Rephlex bullshit factor...

There must be more disinfo about AFX than anyone else...I
think thats the way he likes it...

Yeah, Artemis. But I'd say part of the reason why I'm so
interested in AFX is because so much of his stuff, being
hard to find, has developed a near mythical status.

i don't understand why they create records, let everybody
know about them and then never release them...

Seems senseless to me

Rephlex is more interested in developping a mythical status
than satisfying his fans i suppose.
It's the same problem with SKAM. Why is the MASK-serie so
limited?

a mythical status doesn't sell records...

How make money then?

Selling a few more on ebay when they're worth a shedload
apiece.

offline artemis from Ghent (Belgium) on 2002-02-25 16:44 [#00101063]
Points: 667 Status: Lurker

Yep, that's right, i have seen people bidding for over £500
for MASK 100 (no joke). The seller was also from the
SKAM-crew.

Think a lot of MASk series is limited because of samples
used & not wanting anyone to notice...

And doing limited stuff is often a matter of
economics...easier to finance a 1000 12" that do a huge
release...and also making things limited makes sure you
don't have loads of costly stock lying around...

and perhaps sometimes it's good when things stay small...

offline artemis from Ghent (Belgium) on 2002-02-25 16:57 [#00101082]

It's a pitty of that this serie is so limited, it's one of
the greatest IDM ever made.

I've not heard any of it. Which should I buy first?

Buying the originals ? Ahum, you must be very rich. I have
it all on CD.

offline Ubik from United States on 2002-02-25 17:32 [#00101108]

Rephlex did most of this "bullshitting" well before the
popularity of the internet, and eBay, and thousands of dorky
teenagers having opinions even though they have not even
bought a single Rephlex release. this record is probably
one of their "abortions" as they call it, maybe they tried
something weird with the vinyl and it didnt work, was all
fucked up... so they abandoned it?

if there are really 100 Q-chastic around, i find it very,
very hard to believe that nobody has had the urge to profit
off their copy. its only 4 tracks anyway.

offline Joyrex from watmm.com (United States) on 2002-02-25 17:57 [#00101126]

Q-Chastic wasn't a proper release, it was a test-pressing,
and far less than 100 were made. There were a few
distributed to shops in the early days of Rephlex, and most
who owned it were already friends of Richard/Rephlex anyway,
hence you not seeing it on the net. It DOES exist, but just
like the early BoC stuff, it's in "the right hands" at the
moment and thus why you cannot get your hands on it
otherwise.

From what I heard, the Q-Chastic tracks are nothing special
anyway, so the only real reason to own this would be for the
collectible value, not the actual music, and for me, that
kinda defeats the purpose.

Someone on this very board was saying a couple of weeks back
that he finally got MP3s off a record shop owner, and he was
going to share it out...

Never seemed to happen though...hmmm strange that :)

So do all those BOC releases actually exist? (the ones they
used to have listed on their website)

on the inside of my CD of caustic window compilation, it has
a list of rephlex releases from winter 91 up to spring 98,
and CAT 002 is listed thus "Q-CHASTIC Q-CHASTIC EP" --
more mysterious is the release after it, CAT 003, which is
"UNTITLED UNTITLED" - anyone know what THAT is?
