when you listen to music...

... what are u doing ?

Do you just sit and listen or do you feel the need to make
something else (internets/games/books/TV... ). At the
opposite, do you like putting music when you are doing
something else ?

The best moment for music is when i decide to go to bed,
cause I keep listening to the album that is playing while
lying on my bed, then sometimes I put another one til I feel
asleep. This way I am really enjoying music cause I'm more
concentrated on it, though I may be a bit tired. I can't
really do that during the day : I can't really sit and just
listen, or I become bored quickly, even if the music is
great. =$

I listen to it when I go to sleep, when I'm drriving, when I
get drressed... basically when I have something else to do.
It's not often I sit with the intention of just listening to
an album.

I usually listen music when I do my homeworks or when I'm
using my pc. Yes, also listening music before going to bed
is great too, but when I'm too tired I fall in sleep enough
soon.

95% of the time, when i'm on my computer... that's one of
the reasons why i use my computer so much (even when i don't
really have anything special to do).

i used to listen to music at night with all lights out,
laying on my bed with my headphones on... but i stopped
doing that, even though it was the best way to enjoy it i
guess.

Normally I listen while doing something else, whether it's
"working" at the computer, at my job, or using transport or
waiting somewhere. Sometimes I just listen alone but I
prefer having some sort of visual to go along w/ it.

on my cd player driving in my car. on my discman while
taking public transit. at home either: while on the
computer, playing videogames or even watching tv. videogames
i'll only keep just videogame sound if the soundtrack is
good or it's essential to the game. listening to music while
watching tv is a habit i started recently, which i should
probably stop.

i'd say i rarely just listen to music on it's own...

unless i'm high

Internet, mostly. Boards, wiki, articles, etc. I rarely JUST
listen to music... certain magical albums can transfix me
and make me sit there slackjawed, but they're few and far
between.

I can't fall asleep to music. I will not fall asleep.

I also have trouble reading when listening to music, and
this really sucks... I can read messageboards and internet
articles, stuff I don't have to follow long-term. But I
can't read novels or longer stories or anything that I
really need to develop a mental visual of. My eyes jump all
over the page and my mind can't focus on the story if it's
being stimulated by the music, no matter how mellow. As a
result, I don't read as much as I'd like... I can't bear to
have no music on. I'm pretty sure this contributed to my
academic problems. I haven't had a decent study at home
since 11th grade. :_-(

I know you don't like ambient, but that the kind of music
you CAN fall asleep too, and for that purpose it's top
stuff.

I listen to tons of ambient but I could never fall asleep to
it, ever.

About the only sound I can fall asleep to is slow, plot
driven movies kind of mumbling in the background.

I can't read writtings that need reflexion to be understood
when I listen to music neither, but I can read mbs, articles
on the net and comics

I listen to music all the time it is possible for me, but
the albums I really enjoy I need to listen actively lots of
times by doing nothing else and just concentrating on the
sound

here how I do this:

1. use a good soundsystem or quality headphones
2. make sure the room you are in is in an agreeable
temperature.. not to hot, not to cold
3. remove the batteries of the house bell or take out a
cable
4. in case their is neighbours or any other external factors
which could disturb you during the session, don't even start
it
5. all pets must leave the room before the launch of the
music
6. any kind of consumer goods have to be used before
starting
7. make sure your head is situated as centralised as
possible in between the speakers
8. inform other people in the house about what you are
doing!
9. close all the windows and lock the doors
10. switch of your mobile phone
11. install yourself very comfortably, best lying, all
muscles must be relaxed
12. a non completed listening session is not a listening
session! stay until the end!

Depends on the kind of music in question. Poppy stuff is
fair game for background music/other activities. When it's
stuff you know has depth beyond the immediate surface, then
I usually listen to it on its own. Although, sometimes even
listening to crappy radio hits on their own will have
interesting results. You start picking up on all kinds of
subtle tones and feelings the creators may or may not have
intended.

I prefer CD/tape/MD to mp3 though. I find myself getting the
infamous 'musical ADD' when I listen to mp3s on the
computer. It's too easy to click on something else. Plus,
it's all homogenized into one samey-looking textual playlist
and you don't get the sense that the music is actually
coming from different sources. It all ends up being this
commodified sound product constantly bleeding out of the
speakers. This is exacerbated by 'shuffle' functions.

depends on the music. sometimes i will put an album on with
the intention of doing something else while i listen to it,
but the music often has other ideas..

I used tot have that ADD problem, but I overcame it... it's
not that hard to train yourself to load up a playlist and
just let it go. I became a much happier person. Although I
guess I listen to more boring songs than ever now.
