I have had a SL1200 MKII for one week and it roxxx.

If it's only for listening, you can buy any turntable I
guess, but you won't be able to scratch/DJ properly with the
one on your pic.

what are you going to use it for? scratch/dj or just
listening, and how much money do you have to spend?

200-250 for the turntable itself or turntable + cartridge?
anyway, I don't know how much that is in norwegian kroner,
so I have no reference. good brands are Rega, ClearAudio and
Project (their "Debut" turntable is pretty affordable).

I think denon has some good cheap models too... and NAD are
also good&cheap.

or ortofon.

grados are great, but they're more skilled with headphones I
think... ortofon has got that great cheap/good combination.

I've heard horror stories of those little things wrecking
vinyl, not sure if i'd chance it. Stylish as fuck though,
but it's crying out for a custom paint job.

if you want to do anything tricky, technics are the way to
go, *most* of the other turntables around havea a much
weakers engine or break to easily, technics are like tanks
(they're also about 5 times heavier though)

but you just want to listen, so ANYTHING will do, so long as
it's not belt drive.

"but you just want to listen, so ANYTHING will do, so long
as
it's not belt drive."

Sorry, but I've got to completely disagree with you there.
For DJing, get direct drive, but for listening get belt
drive every time. All serious hifi 'tables are belt drive-
less motor noise and provided they're good quality, there's
no "slipping" of the belt as there might be after much use
for DJing (before someone pipes up, no tech12s are
not hi-fi. They used to be considered hifi in the 70s
when they came out, but things have moved on)

Having recently bought a pair of 1210s, I did a very
thorough listening test, using the same cartridge (a
Goldring 1042), between a 1210 and my Linn Sondek / Akito II
(which is about as good as you can get under, say, £2K).
Several pieces of music were recorded into the PC using both
decks, and ABX software was set up.

I could not tell the difference - nor could anyone else who
tried the ABX test. The Linn is now in the attic, and will
probably end up on ebay. The 1200/1210 is better than you
give credit for!

The difference between cartridges, however, is massive. The
Goldring 1042 murders the Ortofon Concorde S that came with
the 1210s.
