No one ever wants to push the bids up too high, which is
totally understandable. Why raise the price by £50 two
hours before the end, when you can raise it by £1 at ten
seconds to go.

well this guy was obviously using this sniper software to
cheat, which i wasn't aware that existed. i haven't used
ebay for a long time, and i have only one a few auctions
here and there in the past. there's nothing retarded about
me being pissed off that this guy outbidded me on the last
10 FUCKING seconds, it's very normal to feel that way you
robot muppets. i was only expressing my few mintutes
frustration over this. it's no big deal, i couldn't care
less about this now, there will be other auctions. so you
can fuck off with your smartass attitudes both of you.
fucking patronizing pricks.

ok i'm done. that was fun :D

from the internet.

Bah it's just that... who decides what's the last time
before a bid and what's not? Is it morally acceptable for
the last bid to be 10seconds? 1 minute? 10 minutes?
There's no black/white here... just a fucking grey zone.

There's no way to make it perfect for everybody, so I say
keep those sniper software.

i have no knowledge of said sniper software, but common
sense would suggest that it's software that acts
automatically to bid within the remaining moments of an ebay
item's availability in order to assure your purchase.

could you not figure that out for yourself?

yeah, the same thing happened to me once, and I came here
and bitched about it, and I got the same response... then I
realized they were right. Either place you max bid, and
accept it if someone else is willing to pay more then you,
or bid in the last 10 seconds as well... because as long as
the auction is open, it really is fair to place a bid.

that said, I was pissed too, so I understand how ya feel.

it isn't cheating - it's as simple as that. it's completely
within 'eBay guidelines'.

most people know about auction sniping - don't blame the
rest of the world for your ignorance.

offline Taxidermist from Black Grass on 2005-09-19 18:07 [#01727885]

Heh... I once did that. I wasn't intentionally trying to
snipe the high bidder, but I encountered the item with only
five minutes left, did some quick research, determined that
it would be worthwhile. Spent the last 30 seconds furiously
raising my bid to the point that I won, and the last time I
saw the item screen before I won said there was 3 seconds to
go.

10 seconds is plenty of time on eBay, I usually keep two
tabs opened on Opera one ready to bid and another to make
frequent reloads I only do this when I'm serious interested
in a item I hate those snippers who bid on the last 2
seconds that's why you really have to place your max bid and
let eBay bid for you.

sniper software stuff, when it automatically bids does it
bid a certain amount or like, the highest current big +1?

generally they work the same as eBay - you fill in your
maximum bid and the sniper bids in the last few seconds,
which means it'll bid the amount that's just over the
maximum of the previous high bidderm - that is, if your
maximum bid exceeds the previous bid ofcourse.

the only difference with normal bidding is that it does it
within the last few seconds and it does it automatically -
you don't have to hang around etc.

to compare ebay sniping to actual in person auctions is
quite wrong

there is no set time for auctions in real life, but a time
limit after each bid. so you couldn't, let's say, walk into
an auction room at the last second, shout out your bid and
walk away the owner of whatever item.

ebay sniping is shit. just because it's within ebays
guidelines doesn't make it any less slimey an action.

that said, most people just buy things they don't even
really need on ebay, so there's no real reason to get worked
up.

i missed you xltronic

what is your point, though?

yes, you can't compare eBay auctions to actual in person
auctions. therefore you can "walk into an {eBay}
auction room at the last second, shout out your bid and walk
away the owner of whatever item".

it is exactly that difference that is important.

if sniping was said to be unfair, would people using DSL to
connect to eBay also be cheating? what if one browser is
quicker than the other, is that unfair? etc. etc.

it's only a slimey action if you refrain from sniping
yourself out of some misplaced idea of "being ethical".

well i would argue that if one actually bid like one should,
(under the guidelines of ebay) that being your actual max
bid, a faster connection speed really wouldn't be an
advantage and the actually bidding is taking care through
ebay so nobody is advantaged.

in a somewhat related thingymajiggy, i bid 15 dollars max
recently on an item and lost, to someone else who bid 15
dollars. it was weird. i guess however the increments and
turns between biddings worked they ended up on 15 dollars
and i couldn't bid over them. it confused me at first and i
thought i had been duped, but then i thought about it some
more and concluded i'm stupid.

p.s. i sent you an email

oh and i don't think really have a point, other than i don't
like ebay sniping. i think i made up that somebody drew the
corrolation between actually auctions and ebay auctions.
ebay angers my blood and i should probably refrain from any
threads bearing it's name.

well the thing is, sniping has long ago become the norm - so
if you're bidding on a HOT item, you'd better use one too.

I don't mind so much, it's all a silly game anyway really.

offline thecurbcreeper from United States on 2005-09-19 20:38 [#01727950]
Points: 6045 Status: Lurker | Followup to qrter: #01727948

well i don't know for sure, but i figure let's say...

i had just out bid somebody on the item for 12.50 or
something like that (my max bid was 15) then they came back
with 15 or more... (i think it was .50 increments)

me 12.50
them 13
me 13.50
them 14.00
me 14.50
them 15

so since my bid isn't over 15 and even though i was the
initial winner at 12.50 i still can't win
