A friend of mine is living very close to New York and wants
to know good places to spend her time.

Like clubs, gigs, bars, parties etc...
and good record stores to visit, mostly IDM.

I hope there are some people here who know the big apple
good enough to give some advise.

i guess she's in williamsburg?

my favorite record store in nyc is Kim's Video on st mark's
place. they have everything there. don't go to idm
concerts, but i think the knitting factory has them - it's a
great venue anyway.

i actually live on st. mark's like a block from Kim's video
and it is indeed awesome.

another good record store is the soundfix in williamsburg,
brooklyn (bedford and N10th i think). it's mostly indie
rock records but they have a decent amount of electronica
for how small the store is. i shopped there a lot this
summer.

as far as bars go, the darkroom is awesome if you go on a
busy night. it's on ludlow between houston and... i can't
remember the other street.

i was very close to moving to that street a few years ago -
we could have been neighbors.

from Tower Records if thats any help.. I'd also recommend
checking out the museums; Gugenheim and Natural History
which are both near central park (which is also worth
absorbing, if you can)... the place is just soo big. I think
about it most days... id like to live there with my gf
soon..

She can't stand the smell at all, but her university is over
there..so there is no choice.

Other Music is my fave record shop in NYC for electronic
music. It's at 15 E 4th St. in the East Village (not far
from the NYU campus). They've got a nice selection of
experimental and avant-garde as well, though Downtown Music Gallery
has the best. I've found Etherea to have too much of an
"indie rock" vibe. I don't remember them even having any
Squarepusher last time I was in.

I *highly* recommend finding a way up midtown to the Museum
of Modern Art. It's FREE on Fridays between 4 PM and 8 PM
(closing time).

As for bars and clubs, I really dig Tonic on the
Lower East Side. I've heard good things about the Rothko
club, but I've never been.

If you wish to surround yourself will brilliant people, hang
out at the Village Chess Shop; it's fantastic. =)

Yeah, NYC is brilliant! I went there for the first time in
Feb. of this year. Just walk around. I'm a tour guide in my
city (Charleston S.C.) so I talk to a lot of people from all
over the world and one guy recently said that NYC was his
favorite city to walk. I concure. Just pop into what ever
shop or sight happens to present itself. Anyway, d.b.a. in
the East Village is great bar. And definitely go to MOMA.
Subways are really cool too. I bought "Campfire Songs" by
Animal Collective at Other Music and then saw them perform
in a basement of a warehouse in Williamsburg. Awesome!
