I know this topic has occurred vbefore. Forgive me, i grind up against the missing search function at all times. . . Are they worth the $ or are they just gay? |

Right now I'm using one that I am sort of renting for school. It's an older g4 model, but it's pretty nice. The only thing I don't like is the keyboard, which seems kind of flimsy, but probably no worse than other laptop keys. I guess I will need to get used to it more. It seems about as stable as desktop-style g4s, but Internet Explorer has fudged up a few times. Either way I think it's less crash prone than any sort of w\Windows system I've used. |

the keyboard's a bit flimsy, yes. but all in all they are pretty great. I was thinking about buying one this summer, but I found that the need for a laptop wasn't that pressing. I therefore opted for the G5 iMac, which is compact enough to take with me in case somebody would actually hire me to play at a gig (well, the 17" version, which I didn't get btw. the 20" was too tempting). If you need a lappy, then i think the powerbook should do it, but I recommend that you compare it with the iBook, cause that one's pretty great too |

Not audiowise, but stuff like Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, generally graphics software. |

How does photoshop run? which version? Are you using a 1.5 or 1.67ghz model? |

photoshop cs, as well as the rest of the 'cs suite'. It runs well so far but I really haven't done much with extremely gigantic files so I can't form a definitive opinion yet. I think it's only 1 ghz, as it is a year or so old. |

it's be faster than 1ghz if only a year old. i got mine mid-2003 and it's 1.25ghz. |

btw, trick with macs is lots of ram. i just upgraded from 512MB to 1.25GB in mine and jeesus everything is /so/ much faster. i've seen people with old clamshell g3 ibooks (i.e. 300mhz or something), that's a machine which is over 5 or 6 years old now i think, running the latest and greatest apps and latest macosx, with as much RAM stuffed in it it'll take, doing graphics work at perfectly acceptable speeds. macs depreciate a lot less than pc's; or at least, used to before they got hugely popular (think the statement still holds true, just not quite so much), so in many senses a better investment. |
