fuck..

id be overjoyed if anyone can fathom this...

i finished up doing my work on my pc last night, working in
a folder on my desktop. shut down, everything was cool.

get up this morning, turn the pc on and i heard it turn on
again like 5 seconds later and thought nothing of it (i
think maybe the cable came out at the back meaning it cut
out and turned on again straight away?)

anyway, now, my comp takes about 10mins to boot up, theres
like 3 icons on my desktop (instead of about 20) so ive lost
my work, which is v.important...

im just baffled...????

Strange and baffling. You'll probably be better off seeking
out some forums which are full of saddos who thrive on
questions like this.

I had a similar problem. It occured that the information
about my account in the registry got corrupted. Are you
logged to your account?

Never keep important things on your desktop, man. Keep it as
far away from the system as possible.

Try if you can find the content of your desktop in
\documents and settings\your account name\desktop\

I agree with QRDL here, you shouldn't really keep anything
on your rootdrive as it's bound to get fucked up here and
then, and then you'll keep losing everything you got :\

extract hard-drive

bring to a new computer

access it through some other windows that isn't trying to
"protect your stuff."

Damn that system. I'll never touch Linux if I don't have to,
but such things can piss you off.

I have no solution for you. If such a thing happens, it
usually means, that there's is something wrong with the HDD
or you suffered from over-voltage. In my case it was an
exessive dust buildup on the RAM slots. I always reformat
and reinstall, it's quicker than scratching your head
searching for a more intelligent way to get your system up
and running. But in my case it never implies saying good bye
to any of my stuff, I keep it on a different disk.

I understand that this advise is of no use to you now and I
sympathize.

Yeah, listen to Drunken Mastah, that's the most reasonable
thing you can do now.
Or find a friend with glasses and tell him that you need his
linux to retrieve data, that gates stole from you. I'm sure
he'll be more than happy to help. There may be some problems
with NTFS however.

I'm guessing at a hard drive failure type error here. You
might have had an electricity spike which resulted in it
slightly screwing your hard drive and corrupting files.

You can get the data off with the help of lots of money
being paid to companies who specialise in it but you'll have
to decide if this work is worth the cost.

As for the desktop: Storing files on the desktop slows down
the computer on startup. that's about it really.

I just remember reading an article on it.

I wouldn't trust PC World with anything computer wise. They
get hard ons for formatting drives which you've expressly
said "DO NOT FORMAT THIS DRIVE". Then they'll format it.
Luckily not happened to me.

Anyway, this is the best I can offer you.

In the article which was from PC Format they said that it
was charged by the GB.

I don't know for sure that this is a hard drive problem
though so it's best you wait until you know for sure before
spending a shitload of money,

I can't help you with a solution and I won't tell you what
you need to do to prevent this because we all know it's too
late to lock the stable door after the horse has bolted.

I just hope you'll recover your work.
