Anyone heard of this contemporary composer or have any of
his stuff?

Switched on the radio in the car yesterday to come across
this guy's music by chance, and it's really something
else... Some of the piano phrases in "Spiegel im Spiegel"
reminded me of xmd5a, very very dark, very interesting. I've
got to get some of his stuff.

If anyone has a recording of the composition Spiegel im
Spiegel, please give me a shout. If anyone has any other
reccomendations, please post them here.

I advise everyone to check this guy's music out.

His music is airy fairy and does nothing for me.

Nice one. My favorite composer, the man is magic, man, very
holy stuff. I'm revolverjgw on SLSK, if you use that I've
got like a gig of his stuff shared. I can yousendit Spiegel
or whatever if you need it.

Recos which I have shared-

Fur Alina (Spiegel, which as you said is great, plus Alina,
which is even better)
Summa (huge austere soundscapes using strings and horns,
probably my favorite Part stuff is here)
Te Deum (best choral work I've ever heard, gives me chills)
Kanon Pokajanen (another shining choral work)
Orient Occident (some scary tracks and a few pretty ones,
the pretty ones sounding more ''traditional'' than the
average Part work).

redrum, if you like AP, there'a a big chance you'll also
like Arnold Schoenberg's music. They somehow go together in
my head.

You cannot seriously link Schoenberg and Part, Part wrote a
handful of works which were atonal, that's about the only
link. Apart from that, Part's work has been tonal.
Schoenberg was apart of the 2nd Viennese school who all
employed serial techniques. The result is a big difference
in sound.

I am a big fan of Arvo Part, and I have a few of his works.
I did a thread on him around a year ago, actually. ;-)

Glad someone else is into it! Our of all the CDs I own,
"Passio" is probably my favorite.

I also enjoy John Tavener.

i just discovered this composer - my god! so fantastic, dark
and beautiful all at the same time. superb stuff. Miserere
is my fave for the moment. and the piece Cantus In Memory Of
Benjamin Britten from Tabula Rasa. wow.

I heard Arvo Part for the first time a few weeks ago when
all the albums were listed on Boomkat (inc the new one).
Really very nice.

I still claim that a person who likes Arvo Part would
probably enjoy Schoenberg's music. Apart from the
theoreticall mumbo-jumbo, Schoenberg's music is very
sinister and full of dark feelings. You like music for the
sound itself and not for the background behind it, don't
you?

when the verb "spiegeln" was mentioned.

There's not much ''sinister'' about Part, but other than
that, yeah. But I guess some of his stuff has such a
monolithic quality that they can be sort of intimidating by
nature, and his organ works have kind of an edge to them.

I read that Murcof samples Arvo Part.

I have Tabula Rasa and can highly recommend it.

"His music is airy fairy and does nothing for me."

Agreed. I particularly hate the stuff he did with The
Hilliard Ensemble.
