Can one of you turntabley guys tell me how often you have to replace a turntable cartridge?
I have come into possession of an old Technics SL-Q2 that has a Shure SC35C cartridge. Seems to be a decent model from what I've read.
The cartridge may be ten years old or more... can I just replace the needle or does the cartridge degrade over time? Like sometimes "permanent" magnets can lose their juice over time.
Any info greatly appreciated!

I'd change the stylus, if you can track down the one that. There shouldn't be any problems with the cartridge itself. Shure make pretty sturdy Cartridges from what I've heard. Seems like you got yourself a pretty good setup there.

I'm not so sure how your cart is, but go with what vlari said.
my reason for this post is an addition: you could clean the connectors.. both the ones that go from the cart to the turntable and the ones that go to the stylus to ensure your cartridge a longer lifetime... it said so in my carts manual, anyway, but that's an ortofon. No reason why this shouldn't be "universal," though.
I'm not sure what you should use to clean it.. that is, I can't be sure of it's true name, but I think it may be ethanole or something. Check first, though, as I am very likely to mean other chemical compounds, if ethanole even is something... it should be something that "removes itself" (vaporises (sp?)) and doesn't leave any traces.
