Diagram.
The blue thing is the lever The grey thing is the buffer The black thing is the piano string.
Assume that the hammer hits the string at the point in between the buffer and the player.
1-The bottom part of the lever is fixed on a pivot, so it doesn;t actually go anywhere.
2-the top part of the lever is what gets moved. 3-the middle part, is connected to the buffer, so that when the lever gets pulled forward or backward, it causes the buffer to go along the strings one way or another.
4-The buffer rests along the strings, stopping any kind of vibration after the point that it rests.
This is a side profile. The actual design would span across the entire piano. The lighter part of the buffer is made of a medium density felt, strong enough to absorb any vibration that may pass beyond the string, but not strong enough to cause too much strain along the string. It is held in place in a track that gets regular lubrication, so that the buffer itself doesn't push down or detune the paino too heavily.
With a slide guitar, you do not want to press down on the strings. You just rest your finger against them.

a circular "buffer" would reduce string wear.

Wait a second, if I pattent something twice, doesn't the second patent just cancel the first one?

yeah, I was thinking that the buffer would quite simply be a metal tube, as with a steel slide.. of course, it could be glass too, but that may wear more.. I don't know about that yet...
I still don't get what that lever does...

thank you!
it's actually quite random. I put on a scanner and scanned nothing while moving the lid up and down. three different pictures (with the first one doing that "brighter, brighter, brighter") in sequence, and it turned out like this...

The lever is the interface that would allow the player the ability to move the buffer, or slide, along the strings. One hand would be on the keys, the other on the lever. Or it could be inverted, to allow foot control.

oh.
I was thinking the two plates of keys would just float if you moved your hand while holding them. they'd probably be on rails.
