If they were always deaf, they'd just be doing certain
visual patterns with the instrument, not knowing what
anything actually sounded like, just judging it all on
hearing-people's reactions. The end result would probably
be about as good as blind painter who paints by his/her
sense of touch.
But you never know, it could be possible that if they were
taught certain 'rules' of composition, they could make
something that sounds nice, but I think it would be
impossible for them to really express themselves through the
music.

apparently deaf people can teach themselves to pick up on
vibrations.

I imagine the music would be very loud, and I'd love to hear
some.. sounds like it could be interesting...

vibration or just looking at the spectral analysis

deafness isn't always pure silence, it is like the numbing
of the auditory system.

I've heard that they can sense the vibrations, and some deaf
people like to go to see loud music/concerts, but I doubt
that it is possible for them to feel the vibrations enough
to really have a grasp on the interplay of simultaneous
notes and textures, etc.
Although, they probably could make some kick-ass 'Idm' that
we'd all just eat up.

Yeah, but however you define it, it still results in an
inability to hear the outside world.

If you think about it, it could actually work for some kinds
of noise /music concrete. They could just look at the
waveforms and develop the song visually. Though I don't
know if I would personally call the end result 'music'. I
guess the whole 'noise music' thing is a bit iffy when it
comes pinning down what kind of artistic expression it
really is.

good vibrations for deaf

i'm not sure a individual would want to make music, using
solely visual techniques. where would the enjoyment be in
that?

It's funny that most musicans limit themselves to those
rigid harmonic rules, but without even really thinking about
it.
I guess a real avant garde music snob would say that a
musician aught to be deaf if all they are doing is
exercising a tried-and-true scale.

Interesting article, though.

Mylittlesister, have you seen the movie "Touch of Sound"
about Gleenie and her collaboration with Fred Frith? Some
pretty amazing music they play together, especially in the
early parts of the movie.
Or maybe you even have their album. Is it out yet?

no, i have not seen that film, and i have no knowledge about
any evelyn glennie albums, perhaps i should take a
look/listen.

I'll do a search for that movie on some trackers. Maybe it's
available. It's very good apart for some cliched documentary
scenes like a visit to family home, a chat with her brother
etc.

No luck here, no torrent, nothing on the ed2k network. Sad.
Maybe it'll come on DVD when the EG+FF album is ready.

No worries - there's also a Best Of LP that my dad
has. It was my first introduction to Evelyn Glennie &
features her two collaborations with Björk.

dammit! you said all i was going to say. Infact all of you
have mostly talked the topic through and through.

side note: Beethoven wrote some pieces while he was death.
Many composers compose by listening to what is good or not.
Rumour has it that Beethoven dreamt the music and saw the
notes of his later pieces.

not talking about the Woody Allen pic he did about that, a
true one ;)

My old drummer for a band I jammed with used to have to go
to camps and stuff because she was born legally deaf or
something like that. She has 2 hearing aids and stuff. The
trained here and stuff to recognize vibration and some other
aspects of music at some of these sessions.

ANYWAY one day my friend was like "Hey my GF wants to drum
for us!" she sat behind the drums and was like really
awesome . Not only did she have an ear impairment she
drummed really awesome for someone who never drummed
before.

Our band was this noise rock thing I always wanted to do so
don't expect smooth jazz or something heh, but if you are
really interested here are some links to the songs. We put
them out under my name because I already had some what of a
fan base so they could actually reach some ppl !

Beautiful Bicycle (Performed with the Turbo Graphic 16's)
Drywall

Everyone in the band besides my self had little or no band
experience, but out of all the bands I've been in (lots)
this was my favorite !
