what's the chance he would come up with something as good as this album again? i hope he's not out of ideas, because that last thing he put out was very disappointing..there's no news about him, is he still into music at all? :)

mmmm.. I listened to this yesterday
I haven't actually heard his later albums.. I got the impression this latest one was only live performances of songs from endtroducing, but it seems I may have been wrong.. anyway, I didn't buy it yet, nor did I listen to it...

I'd be surprised if he can manage something as good as his early output again. Endtroducing and the EPs that surrounded it (collected on PreEmptive Strike) are so superior to his followup album, any of the work he's done with Quannum, or any of the other pies he's had his dirty little fingers in since '96. That said, the instrumental tracks on the first UNKLE LP (the ones that have Shadow written all over them) rate among his best material too.
I did go and see him for his first 'live' tour in 2002 and it was pretty good fun, a nice spread of his material. He didn't rely too heavily on music from The Private Press, thank god.

never again, i don't think. i think one of the greatest things about this album is it somehow communicated how he listens to hiphop. you can really hear how his mind works.
for example, play 14. Napalm Brain/Scatter Brain from 2:04 onwards...he gradually layers different elements, occasionally pauses to listen to them individually, then after "understanding" them somehow work them into the composition. there is something almost expressionistic about it..

yeah, unkle's lp (if you mean psyence fiction or something) was pretty great..probably my fav record at the time it came out..
private press was just boring..he was trying to come up with more trendy sound or something but it just doesn't fit his music..
d'mastah, you're not missing much..although if you haven't heard that unkle you should perhaps..

I should reiterate, though, that the standout tracks on UNKLE's Psyence Fiction record are the ones where Shadow worked alone:
Unkle Main Title Theme, Unreal, Celestial Annihilation
When it comes to the collaborations, it tends to be the ones with less 'obvious' artists that work best. Working with people like Richard Ashcroft (The Verve), Mike D (Beastie Boys) and James Hetfield (Metallica) feel rather like showboating for the sake of it. Of the 'celebrity' collaborations the Thom Yorke (Radiohead) track works best, but I really think the less well known guest artists come off better: Kool G Rap, Alice Temple, Atlantique.
Even Badly Drawn Boy wasn't well known when he guested on this record. Nursery Rhyme sounds nothing like his solo output, so don't be put off by the fact that he's the same guy who recorded the OST for About A Boy starring Huge Grunt.

That UNKLE record was rated so highly when it came out, but time has shown up the cracks pretty quickly. Like I said, the high points are Shadow's contributions. Just how important he was to the project has been proved time and time again in all the appalling James Lavelle-led UNKLE releases over the past few years.
It's kind of like the Gorrilaz project in my book - just because you bring together a group of individuals that have been successful in their own right doesn't mean that you're garuanteed to produce a good record.

You're more or less right. Lavelle was billed as "creative director" whatever that may be. But - on certain tracks at least - the collaborators must have had some input.
All I meant was, the strongest tracks are the Shadow-only instrumentals.

Haha - yeah, that makes sense. I hate filler on albums so much. That's why I never really buy any rap records. Half the tracks are devoted to pointless skits that you only want to listen to once, if at all.

i dont see anything wrong with the private press, its a good record. entroducing is a once in a lifetime piece of genius, it will be forever heralded as one of the greatest albums ever made, it doesnt necessarily show a lack of new ideas of shadows part, it's just one hell of an album to follow up.

imo his two albums : Endtroducing and The Private Press are both really excellent !!
i don't understand how you can dislike the second one, it's different from the first but excellent too ! i even prefer this one i guess
preemptive strike is really good too !
nevertheless i admit that his last album, which was mainy composed of cuts from The Private Press (it's called The Private Repress) is not good

i've read somewhere that «'Deadringer' [by RJD2] sounds like the record Shadow should have made instead of the disappointing 'The Private Press'» - and i love Deadringer.
