Stepmania - IDM DDR

StepMania is a cross-platform open source Dance Dance
Revolution clone. It also has a builit in editor so you can
make dance patterns for songs of your choice.

Let's make a course filled with good electronic music to
replace all the pop trance and techno that is standard for
the game.

Yeah, it's cheesey but it's fun.

ddr _should_ be done to idm. unfortunately, ddr is also
retarded as all hell.

how about some real dance-pad steps by autechre or
sqrpusher

being a pro myself, i need a new challenge cause all these
ITG/DDR/STEPMANIA tracks is boring the shit out of me. the
ones that are playable by foot mind-you. not down with the
fingering shit

DDR is what it is. Trying to force IDM into DDR is like
trying to play Bach over a Britney Spears video. Just
because you play 'good' music over a 'cheesy' video won't
make the final product any better. All it will do is strip
both formats of their individual charm.

while not being too enthusiastic about bucephalus bouncing
balls in ddr, i do think there is room for idm in ddr.

there are quite a few squarepusher and aphex tracks
available by now.
i downed a couple of them, but most of them were in this
ridiciulous unplayable difficulty settings.
dont see the point in a weird cascade of arrows.

two days ago i built me a quick dancepad and was utterly
disappointed by the poor choice of original tracks in ddr.
they lacked rythm and taste. so i started to implement a
sugarhill gang track. next up was super mario land gb track.
yakety yak and Raumagent Alpha - Bublbobl.

then i figured how to hunt down tracks instead of uploaded
packs.
so now i try to gather those that are fun and dancable.

anyway there is a couple of more tracks i wanna finish
myself and i wondered what other ziltians play ddr :)

this is a cool idea, just imagine the spazzy dance moves
that go along with vordhosbn

been doing "Fitness Boxing" on the Switch.

Doing right hooks and uppercuts to Carly Rae Jepson and
Video killed the radio star. Who needs integrity? At least
I'm getting fit.

it could be pretty nice, vordhosbn is quite melodious, there
are notes that could be held/pressed, plus the kicks are
fun. there is no way you could possibly dance the fast
snares (there could be quick combos though).
keep in mind its not about tapdancing. it doesnt work on a
ddr dancepad anyway because of the distance of the buttons.

vordhosbn is also quite short as a track and it has been
done. gonna check that one out.
most ddr tacks are less than two minutes, because its quite
challenging for mind and legs. also in the arcade or if you
play with friends at home you want to take turns quickly, to
have nice cash flow and not get bored on the bench.

boxing could be real fun if you actually had to hit targets
like in the fist of the north star arcade. i thought about
building punch buttons for punch out and super punch out. or
combine them with the mat buttons for evading and dodging.
the problem i wasnt able to solve mounting the punch buttons
in mid air. maybe some rubber bands hanging from the ceiling
to the floor would do.

i'll play DDR in the arcade, but never got into the homebrew
stuff

i love some of the DDR music, particularly cranky

i remember playing DDR at the student center in college for
hours. then, back at the dorm, i splash some water on my
face, full tetris effect, see a nebulous grid of DDR arrows
ghosted across my field of vision. one of the first times i
remember noticing tetris effect so crisply. more interesting
was after a marathon study session, my field of vision being
covered with nebulous differential equations that i could
never quite read

hehe, last time i had something similar was after playing
bit.trip runner.

since there are practically no arcades in germany and the
arcade club i found out about just in time to visit once
before corona shut it down for the year, playing at home is
the only way right now.

bet there is a few fun stompers in original ddr, havent
found any favourites so far. the homebrews have an equal hit
and miss ratio, but they are songs i know and like and that
worked rather well on "out of space" which is really done
well with paused arrows and a really good overall pattern.
really...

right so all of the packs containing vordhosbn are made for
keyboard dancers with 600 arrows and over. is there a quick
way to slow stepmania down to 33 rpm???

there is some whole pyddr python ddr architecture, you can
do anything, terrifying pyramids

nature of the project.

i used to make edits according to my dance steps. in my old
flat i always listened to the tracks while making them in
another room to feel them in my feet. then go back at them.
havent made any music the past two years. feels like another
lifetime by now.

if you know python that is.

it could be done by slowing the track down in another
program, then re-import and edit the bpm. timing should be
the same then. while i was saying that jokingly it might
actually be worth a try.
maybe some other day.

sometimes when i'm working on stuff in milkytracker i'll
play it over and over as i job about the room, dancing,
moving a bit, i feel like it helps me compute, running jobs
on my neural DSPs. dancing to it forces you to summarize it,
for lack of a better word, and that can help build something
more solid in your hed

yes its a good way to figure out something natural.
i remember in tracker software jeskola buzz there was a hint
suggesting to tap your beat with two hands like imitating a
drummer. if you can play your beats like that they ll feel
good. not a bad approach either.
