...and by the way i don't know why track titles (or headlines in some newspapers) often have every word capitalized except "the", "or", "by", etc. capitals are quite useless, i could write all in lowercase letters... there are only a few exceptions to this, "history" vs. "History" for example (and still it's not that important - most of the time you can guess what history it is). or in "the maggot" by the melvins, the first song is called "amazon" and the second one "AMAZON" - that's one of the only cases where capitals really have a purpose. (another thing that annoys me is when people don't put the accents on capital letters - even though you don't have this problem in english) |

Because it is absolutely pointless and unnecessary. I hardly see a difference between this, and typing in all caps to attract attention. It's only annoying, imo. And i just have this feeling that a lot of people (mostly americans, yeah that's right) genuinely don't know when to use caps, so they just use them whenever, just like they use 'there/their' in many different ways in even one paragraph. 'theirs just One thing that Pisses me off ya know its like when you say something to people and there all like wtf?' UGH. |

it's called title case and has every place in being used in the title of a topic. it is an accepted format in publishing hence the use in newspaper headlines etc. check on Microsoft Word under change case it has title case included there. |

I'm only interested in why some people do this (perhaps subconsciously, perhaps because they're completely clueless) and why some don't. It doesn't matter a whole lot, no. I can read these thread titles as well as 'regular' ones. These things don't ruin my life nor will i be pissed off about them all day. It just strikes me as odd that people seem to be reinventing or modifying the english language online. I take language seriously because i feel it's important. Imagine books being written in this internet language... What a nightmare. Whenever something like this is said, there's always the usual replies such as 'who gives a shit' and all that, which is exactly what causes this 'new way of writing (typing) where nothing really matters as long as people still get the message'. Either way, this is an endless discussion, and only the beginning of it, though i wouldn't mind seeing more people talk about these things. I remember i_x_ten's thread about the 'their/there/they're thing' the other day, and i know it gets about 10 reads, and people will have fucked off to something more digestible and light hearted. I know there are others who appreciate good use of language, such as ceri jc, marlowe and qrter (just a few examples, there are lots) and i envy them for being able to jokingly deal with these issues instead of getting actually pissed off like me, which is of course pointless. Didn't marlowe say something along the lines of 'the english language cannot be saved anymore anyway' ? |

I agree completely, though i must admit i'm a lazy bastard when it comes to this. i often neglect using caps at the beginning of sentences even though i'm well aware it's only a wee bit extra effort. i almost admire people who take the time to type 'I' in mid sentence. cheers godel and hanal :) |
