Word .doc to HTML?!?! Please help!

Ok, I figure there are enough web savy heads on here,
someone might have suggestion....

I am designing a site for this woman and need to convert a
7+ page C.V. to HTML, in order to fit into my CSS
architecture of the site. I'm also going to need to do the
same thing for her syllabi and courses list, etc. I know
Word exports to HTML, but it is typically UGLY as sin, dense
code, and nearly impossible to implement into CSS to make
the fonts correlate with the rest of the text in the site.

Does anyone know of anything out there that converts text, a
Word .doc, or a Copy&Paste, into HTML - keeping the tabs and
spaces, fonts and font sizes intact, translating them to the
necessary HTML?

When I hand over the reigns to her site, she is going to
need a simple solution to update. Throwing hard breaks and
counting lines between divs seems like too much of a bitch
for both her and I.

Thanks in advance,

gl0tch

have you tried Word's Save As... HTML option ?

Thank you for responding! But as I mentioned in the intial
post:

"I know Word exports to HTML, but it is typically UGLY as
sin, dense code, and nearly impossible to implement into CSS
to make the fonts correlate with the rest of the text in the
site."

That doesn't work, because tabs and spaces need to be
translated into non-breaking spaces ( ). Also, that
wouldnt leave the font data intact either.

try importing the .doc into something like publisher and
saving it as a .jpg then just have the .jpg on a .html

you mean have the text file as an image of the textfile?
It's 7 pages long. Also, that wouldnt implement it into the
CSS architecture.

Seriously dude, grow up. You're riding the same lame and
humor-lacking joke for 5 months now. You're counter
productive and represent ever valid claim by WATMM as to why
this board fucking blows.

I, for one, choose to ignore those claims as much as
possible, but with the shit you constantly pull, it becomes
increasingly difficult.

Typically, I think banning people is lame, but if the
moderators took the time to see how often you pull this shit
in every god damn thread I post in, I think your shit would
be curbed for a few weeks. And rightfully so!

You lack class and are an embarrassment to this board.

I seem to remember something about a php function that reads
.doc and outputs them, but I'd have to read up on it to tell
you, and I don't think I have the time...

you could also use XML, but I don't know syntax for those
xml-styles, so you'd have to figure that out for
yourself...

but.. do you want something that looks exactly like the
document, or is the document designed or something?

if you just want a document, all you need is a
css-stylesheet, divs, paragraphs and spans.. also remember
all the selectors and pseudo-elements of the css to make
effective code.

7 pages is far too long for a CV anyway, but you should know
that CSS means you separate design from content, meaning you
can paste your word doc into the body of the html and add
your tags where necessary..

offline Exaph from United Kingdom on 2005-08-20 11:59 [#01701321]
Points: 3718 Status: Lurker

that is, add your css tags where necessary in the word text
( etc.) and if you already have a css file link it to that
to pick up the formatting.

offline Exaph from United Kingdom on 2005-08-20 12:02 [#01701322]
Points: 3718 Status: Lurker

oh and if you have separated design from content
appropriately then all you will both ever need to update is
the html text - not the css file (unless you wanna change
the formatting) sorry to go on... try useit.com or w3c.org -
may be more help?

Thanks for the help. It's 7 pages b/c she's, well....,
"established" sorta.

The whole point is that she is going to be updating this
herself and we need to avoid her manually adding tags, while
maintaining the overall look of the css structure.
Ultimately a "drag & drop" approach would be most desirable,
though with the CV we're dealing with 2 columns here; year
and respective content, and need to translate the margin
between the two (which is just tabbed in Word) into HTML so
it appears the same way.

Does that make sense? sorry if confusing.

Essentially, I want the HTML version to look like the 2
column, tabbed and margined Word version, with the years on
the left and the content for each respective year justified
on the right. So yeah, I guess its designed and would like
a way to have that design translated into HTML without
having to manually add all those tags and non-breaking
spaces and hard breaks, etc.

In any case, thank you for your reply!!!

isn't it possible to create "macros" for how word
"translates" to html? if you make her always use the
formatting drop-down menu in word (the one that says
"header" and "normal text" or whatever) and not custom
font-sizes and faces in word and then export using that
macro which you modify so that it fits your stylesheet and
then use php includes on the site.. I think I'm saying this
in a more complicated way than I need to, but I hope you
catch my drift...

for tabs, you would probably do better with margin-left than
nbsps, btw...

if you have dreamweaver or another web page creation
software then im certain the quickest and simplest way will
be to simply copy and paste into the of a new page.. keep
the word document open in another window so you can refer to
the desired formatting.

if this is just for people to go and check her cv online
then compliance isnt a major issue, in which case i would
suggest what is known as a hybrid layout - combining a
simple borderless 2-column table in html containg the tags
where you will paste the content from word...

you may want to give the table a set width and height to
maintain your indent, say about 600px wide. so then in html
column one you will have insert spiel (and same for
column 2) and in your css you will have something like:

.p {
margin-left: 50px;
and all your font styling and size etc here too
)

now she will only ever have to edit the html bit where
'insert spiel' is. is that any use for you? not very
detailed im sorry. you can also then do the same to format
say, your headings = .h1 = .h2 and so on, which may be
useful for dates, past job titles etc..

anything i have posted in arrow brackets has dissapeared!!!
makes this tricky to explain! imagine these brackets are the
arrow ones;

so column 1 html = [p]insert spiel[/p] (css = .p)
and the examples for headers are
heading 1
(css =
.h1)

hope this somehow makes sense... the point is you can
emulate your word doc (with much more flexibility and style
imo) and she only needs to edit the html, not the css.

editing would be even easier if she just had plain text
files to edit, and these were auto-included (php includes
work perfectly!) into the layout.

fuck me - hybrid layout means to combine a table with css
for layout purposes. (tables are supposed to contain data).

i know nothing really about php, but imo, a html file is
pretty much a plain text file.

well, a html file has got lots of tags and stuff.. if she
doesn't know what she's doing, it's better to exclude the
tags and have her edit content only.

you should find out about includes. they're really useful,
and a better alternative to frames and iframes (if you need
scrollers and stuff, use includes inside divs with
overflow:auto;). Basically, includes makes it possible to
build a dynamic site using "modules" where you only include
the necessary modules when they are necessary and leave them
out when you don't need them. It also makes it easier to
keep track of your code, as you have one file to each
"function" or "section."

Yeah, I know nothing about php either, but hear thats the
way to go with creating more dynamic sites ala comments for
blogs, etc.

By the way, I'm doing the site in a text editor, but have
Dreamweaver and could try to figure out something there. I
just dont want to waste time "learning" DW, while progress
halts on the site.

Hey, check this out: Txt2Html

includes are really easy.. you don't need to know any php to
use them...

all you need is php installed on the server and they should
work.

?php include("url"); ?
