hi, i was wondering if there is some program that lets you carry over your mp3 tag song name to your file name...this is too much of a pain in the ass to do one at a time.
hopefully i am just a moron and there's a way to do it through itunes.

oh! and also you can name your files using ID3 ver 1 or ver 2...
as stated here
TAG to Filename (ID3v1 & ID3v2)
Writes information from the tag to the filename using a totally free format defined by YOU.
Filename to TAG (ID3v1 & ID3v2)
Reads information from the filename using a format YOU defined and writes it into the tag.

It's probably bad for you to tag your mp3s, because if you share them your name might show as "encoder" like in the case of Casey Grabowski leaking that new B.O.C. record, mimi. I would regret you getting sued and sent to "teh debtors' prison just like Charles Dickens' father, John Dickens from Portsmouth," innit?

Well epohs, I haven't tried very hard to figure out how to use the motherfucker. After a disappointing run-in with the error message "The file could not be renamed because the filename already exists. Perhaps two or more files have the same TAG," I kind of gave up until my thread got bumped. And then I got the error message again...it takes me a while to become comfortable with new weird programs, so it's probably just something idiotic that I'm doing wrong.
What the hell, when I put the artist/album/track title into itunes, that's creating an ID3 tag RIGHT?!?!! oh god if it isn't i wasted my life

there are 2 versions of ID3 tags, right? Maybe that tagging program uses a different one than iTunes? Maybe it's adjustable somewhere.

yes, i'm pretty sure that itunes writes ID3 tags when you do that.

The one I've been using is the Godfather. It's a pain to get the hang of but it's fast and does everything you could think of. And it doesn't crash when you loads 10000 songs at once.
tgf_full.zip - available in a million and one places http://users.otenet.gr/~jtcliper/tgf/tutorials/01/ - big help

look, post rezzing!!!!!!!!!!
i have no idea about flacs. FREE RIP is the best audio ripper around if thats what you r lookin for - rips CD to wav, mp3 and [the completely pointless] ogg format. tags and file names come out the same.
ive never actually really needed to use a standalone tagger program.

cdex hasn't been updated for a long time, dissapointingly; i quite like it, too. it still does the job, just make sure you use the latest encoding dll's (lame, et al) to ensure the best quality rip.

Tag&Rename seems to me the best option to do all your rename and retag of all your audio files, friendly and easy to use, the only bad thing is that it is not a free software. I'm still "learning" to use The Godfather, the truth is that it is very confusing compared to Tag&Rename
Foobar2000: excellent program, VERY customizable, indeed it does a LOT of things
CDex: very good choice, but as xf said, it hasn't been updated, but again, it still can do a flawless job
EAC: Exact Audio Copy, without doubt the best audio ripper out there, why?, well because it offer gap detection, creation of CUE sheets; secure, fast and burst extraction methods selectable... you must see the full list features
