whatever? Was he a cherub? Anyway yeah he rocks, haven't
heard Cautella yet but I'm glad I haven't, it's something to
look forward to.

weird. i would say the exact opposite to the original post
in this thread.

i thought richard devine's stuff was okay, but lacked almost
any semblence of melody, whereas aphex's stuff has
everything you could want from percussion and melody etc etc

There's nothing selling-outty about doing sound design for
commercials, especially when you're still cranking out the
kind of EyeDeeYem R-Dev does. Take the money and run if you
have the opportunity, you'd be foolish not to. It's not like
he's sacrificing any artistic credibility or freedom.

(obligatory qualifying sentence in case you're kidding,
laugh on-line)

From what I understand, Richard Devine did the sound for the
Halo 2 website. Did he do the actual game too?

Anyways, he got started with a 25,000 investment from his
parents. Read it in an interview somewhere.

offline Taxidermist from Black Grass on 2005-08-19 01:29 [#01700015]
Points: 9958 Status: Lurker

He did one of the songs for the halo 2 soundtrack, as well
as some ambient sound designing for the game.

And for all the nonbelievers, richard devine is the shit.
Just because you can't wrap your head around anything more
complex than a sped up jungle beat doesn't give you the
right to hate on it.

i've given dicky d alot of consideration (i have all his
releases) and i really just don't see what's special. he
just seems like a guy with a lot of equipment. if you
stripped his rhythms of the sounds he used, they'd show the
true form of how boring they are.

that said, i do think he has a couple stand out tracks.

he's a very nice guy indeed..very modest from my impression.
i dig his music quite a bit, although i've learnt to hear
music different lately, and devine somehow doesn't quite fit
into the first league of my fav artists. he's definitely
high up there though!

I still think Lipswitch is the best. Cautella is ok and
Asect:Dsect and Alemapper have their moments. Its just that
everything post-Lipswitch is more like elaborate techno,
than IDM. I said this in another thread: Dare I say, most
of this "electronic music" we listen to is geared to the
"cerebral." On the otherhand, I think Devine's music is
definitely more bodily oriented. Perhaps thats what throw's
people off. Who knows? I do find myself getting bored of
him sometimes though. That's not because I dont "get" him.
To me its just because a lot of his tracks seem like 5-7
minute long intros that never resolve a complete idea.

i dont see the big deal about his parents giving him 25,000
i say fuking respect to him im not jealous cos lets all be
fuking frank here, if your rents offered to give you 25,000
you would NOT say no
so good on him and his rich parents i dont think it says
anythinga bout his music ive been listening to him for a
while and i think hes a stand out artist

i dont think u can compare him to the twin though i dont
think they are that similar nots aying one is better than
the other its just different

it's a funny electronic music community... they seem to
want the electronica artists to spend their time writing
scores for tv commercials instead of making albums and doing
things that are actually interesting. it would really
surprise me if most of the people here haven't also
downloaded richard devine's music for nothing rather than
buying it so that he'd earn royalties on his albums.
because we all have to make a living, so you might as well
support the music by wearing the sneakers they endorse,
right? just what the world needs is IDM Car Salesmen.

im sorry but i hate this basement music thesis. the idea
that music has to stay underground and if anyone does
anything that might make them money... say releasing a
series of vinyl singles and charging a shit load for em or
releasing an album of remixes cos the balance has gone
down.

so what if its commercial it doesnt require you to buy into
capitalism i like the fact i sit with the telly on and
suddenly theres r d or rdj its an expression of how good the
msuic is.

i hate the beliefe that music is only good or cool as longa
s you listen to it alone in you basement and make sure no
one who isnt in the scene never hears about it

jesus if i had a record deal id do my first album and then
id start a idm boyy band and watch you fuckers cry :P
hehe

who said anything about holding artists back? i implied
that the opposite was true. i asserted that because artists
don't get as much income from their art, they resort to
making money by using other means. your understanding of
the music industry seems a bit skewed and you have different
priorities than many other people. i understand your point,
but it's really much different than what i just said.

i get you, i think im just bitter about the basement
attidude which i tend to see alot (not neccacerily here).
but i dont know i write music but im really into sound
design aswell. id love to do it as a side project and maybe
some artists see it that way. or maybe they have a short
piece they cant find a use for anywhere else and fancy the
exposure, i think alot of people take a really cynical view
on music for adverts. as to buying the records and
supporting them i agree totally but i just odnt think its
always about money when people do these things but then
maybe im niave or misisng the point again

:)

Downloaded Cautella yesterday.
Arc Acid was the only one that stood out. Sigstop was really
well done DSP tricks but the drums programming has no
funkyness.

Why does he always do that four four beat where its like.
kick squeak pop boom chikky chikky chock boom.

Thats like the only style of rythm he does. Sounds like a
guy tripping over shit in Radio Shack.

whether you think an artist is selling out by letting a
company use their music for a commercial or not, or you
think they are selling out by doing the sounddesign for a
commercial or not - let's not kid ourselves:

it's firmly for the money.

Honestly I am glad that some IDM people are trying to make
money doing what they love. He hasn't become any more
commercial because of it. His music isn't corporate. The
ultimate purpose behind art, as I can see it, is it helps a
society evolve.
