so i was at work today, on my break, sat at the bar minding my own business when the boss asked me if i wanted to take over doing sound engineering a couple nights a week to take the pressure off the head sound engineer... so i said cool, that would be good experience (im studying sound engineering now, im in year 2 of 4) so i rocked up tonight to work with anna the head engineer, and she lost it, couldnt keep the band under 99dB (liquor licensing laws) and switched them off and then quit leaving me with the parting words "well its all up to you now" so now i am the most severely underqualified head sound engineer in one of brisbanes most respected popular live venues. oh and tomorrow night i get to do sound (alone) for the extremely popular extremely loud punk act 6fthick.
im feeling the pressure like a motherfucker.
but i do have a lot of ideas this anna girl didnt have as far as keeping the sound down with these live bands... anyone familiar with live sound and who can give me some little known tips, that would be great. thanks.

its not that simple, we broke the sound levels tonight without any mic'ing at all, except vocals... just the acoustic sound of the drum kit was breaking 99dB mark...
im thinking about enforcing all drummers to use rods instead of sticks, and the kick and toms are also a big problem

you're going to force a punk band to use rods instead of sticks? how's that gonna work? seems like that's a problem you can't really control, perhaps this venue isn't booking the right acts.
i don't have much experience with live sound, so i can't really help you out. good luck though, hope are able to manage this!

I would use a master limiter. Set your limit and away you go! + it doesnt sound shit like a pumping compressor.
In the uk some venues have a decibel metre wired into all the sockets on the stage, if it goes over a certain level the power cuts.
I have found ways around this tho. A long extension lead that reaches into an uneffected part of the buildings power.
climb up and tie a jumper around the sensor.

How remote is the venue? How likely are you to get in trouble (with the law) if it goes over 99db?
I really can't imagine a punk band being compliant with request to 'keep it down'. They're more likely to intentionally up it to wind you up...
Have a look at the regulations relating to the 99db limit. Does it only cover amped instruments? Perhaps if you keep those under 99db, you'll be okay.
Have you looked at the options for soundproofing the venue? It won't significantly decrease the volume inside, but it might stop people outside complaining?
How come this problem hasn't occured there before? Is it a new venue/has it recently had a refit? Is the legislation new?

I would be really, really surprised if he hadn't thought of that if it is at all possible.

its a new legislation thats come in, the sound from the doorway of the venue must not exceed 99dB full stop. i think my first option is : be an arsehole to the bands.

I know it's a bit extreme and it's probably not a short term solution, but have you considered an 'airlock' style system of doors between the room(s) the bands play in and the entrance to the venue? Even if there are already 2 doors, the addition of another door (with the appropriate sound proofed partition wall) could make enough of a difference. Depends on the layout of the place/available budget though. You could use it as a 'feature' of the place to compartmentalise the entry place/ticket till, corridor/space giving access to the cloak room and the actual room bands play in.
From the artist's POV (depending on the act of course), having a comparatively low sound ceiling could be a real pain. I know when DJing I've had people repeatedly asking to turn it up, but then the venue staff/engineer turning it down when I do.
