Fabulous, thrilling and rather sad story. I was deeply moved
by the ending.

The movie to follow in 2006.

bout the Film
"A Scanner Darkly" is set in suburban Orange County,
California in a future where America has lost the war on
drugs. When one reluctant undercover cop is ordered to start
spying on his friends, he is launched on a paranoid journey
into the absurd, where identities and loyalties are
impossible to decode. It is a cautionary tale of drug use
based on the novel by Philip K. Dick and his own
experiences.

Like a graphic novel come to life, "A Scanner Darkly" will
use live action photography overlaid with an advanced
animation process (interpolated rotoscoping) to create a
haunting, highly stylized vision of the future. The
technology, first employed in Richard Linklater’s 2001
film "Waking Life," has evolved to produce even more
emotional impact and detail.

I can't wait for the movie... I think it will be great

A Scanner Darkly used to be my all time favorite book, until
I read VALIS, also by Philip K Dick.

VALIS wins, but only by a little bit. Its about a guy who
has a mental breakdown after 2 of his friends die, and he
develops a second personality to cope. That second
personality spends most of its time writing an explination
for God, and why there is suffering in the world. Its really
amazing, Dick takes religious, mythological, philosophical
text, and constructs this insane reality in an attempt to
understand the universe.

I highly reccomend it. (its a little heavy to read though,
since he references so many things... I had to go online a
lot and read about what he was referencing, like religious
quotes, or mythological creatures etc)

can anyone explain the title to me?

i found this bible passage:

'For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to
face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also
I am known.'

but that doesnt explain the scanner part.

its a reference to the bugging devices, "scanners" that are
watching the main character.

All of you guys, try ubik. Seriously, it cures all
ailments, remedies faulty gonads, and even defuses
illusions!

honestly, ubik might have been my favorite of his, though
the topic material wasn't exactly my style. It was one of
those pkd novels which you can't put down and you finish
feeling as if the experience was your own.. but the
execution is fucking *sick* in this one. oh and the ending
makes you think some. look forward to it.

Note I read it 1.8 years after a scanner darkly and do
androids dream, and the other pkd I read in between wasn't
nearly as good, but I still think it may have been the best
of his I touched.. enjoy

J198: from Wikipedia "The 'scanner' of the title is a
holographic recorder/projector on which the main character
views clips of his own life but doesn't recognize them. It
is also a reference to a Biblical verse in 1 Corinthians 13
that includes 'we see as through a mirror darkly', and thus
refers to the main character's weak grasp on reality. SD,
the initials of Scanner Darkly, are presumably clipped from
LSD, and are also the initials of Substance D."

Also have any of you swamis read The Man in the High Castle
that book is fucken A.
