FZ!

yes, to celebrate the return of my lovely frank zappa
avatar, made 100% from real panda skin, I decided to upload
this video of Frank Zappa & The Mothers of Invention doing
something rather crazy in 1974.

This is a song called Approximate. Frank describes its
unusual characteristics at the beginning, so i won't go into
that.

I will say, however, that it's very, very entertaining (esp.
frank's mimicking in the singing part) and, regardless of
its jazz/avant garde-craziness, very, very enjoyable music.
I really, really dig the melody.

I'd urge everyone and anyone to get this :) I just hope its
bandwidth isn't exceeded by the time vpusha comes on.

Enjoy!

yousendit link (~50 mb)

oink!

LIVE. sheesh!

maybe it's just cause it's morning.

It has generated 50MB of d/l, and so far I wanted to listen
to the radio, it's like this: download=no radio. But now I'm
going to watch Family Guy so I'll start the download. I'm
interested in Zappa since I know very little of him...

Once I saw him perfofming with quite a large ensemble of
musicians; there was a woman blowing a large tube
(digeridoo?) into a tank filled with water (thus making
water-fart sounds), and a guy in the back was reading a
letter to some magazine written by a subscriber, who tried
to get his scrotum pierced. They would played some chaotic
passages, the guy read the letter, and so on...

glad the both of you enjoy it :)

obara, hope you have the full thing. it ends abruptly after
the dancing section, when zappa hums the beginning of the
melody of the next song (obviously "Cosmik Debris").

If anyone has the whole video of this televised concert, i'd
love it.. but i know i'm asking in the wrong place. just on
the off chance.

i have the video for Inca Roads from this performance too,
it's great, but just when frank starts soloing, the video
changes to some crazy plasticine stop-animation, and....
augh. it's just kinda head-wrecking and annoying.

i wanna see zappa and george duke soloing, not some acid
head's bizarre plasticine movie... :/

yea i was going to bring it in on my iPod as a treat for
people who liked the first video, but last night when I
watched it I saw the gay plasticine movie (it's actually
pretty neat, but i've expressed why i don't like it already)
and it put me in a bad mood, so i didn't put it on the
ipod.

i could do it tomorrow i guess

:D! yes Ruth Underwood is a legend.

Some of his lyrics are quite profane yea, but tbh I don't
listen to many of his songs. I find his songs pretty shit -
the music suffers too.. His instrumental jazz rock and
classical stuff.. basically the instrumental stuff.. is just
mindblowing. pick up a copy of hot rats or the grand
wazoo or waka/jawaka some time. deadly stuff

Yeah :/ it's a terrible pity.. Even though i don't enjoy
much (if any) of his stuff made after the 70s.

He got big into "Synclavier" composition in the 80s,
culminating in a gigantic, and rather difficult, work in the
early 90s, "Civilisation Phase III". A Synclavier is a
now-obsolete computer-based composition tool and orchestra.

I'd love to have him sat down with a copy of drukQs, or even
*any* of the weirder music discussed on this forum. I
imagine he would have loved it - it shares so many
similarities with his music: polyrhythms, be-bop melodies (i
always thought acid melodies are kinda scattish)... and also
the obsession with "sculpting" sound which he held.

I always wondered what, for example Beethoven, or Mozart
would say if thay have heard Suarepusher or Autechre?

pure rubbish, i imagine. Mozart certainly. Music had strict
conventions and rules back then and that sort of music
doesn't comply with them.

I'd say the lack of melody would piss them off the most --
or even, let's say in the case of squarepusher, the melody
would do just the same.

Remember, jazz was only born at the turn of the 20th
century.. :o

I agree, but not completly, remember also that they were
pure musical geniuses, they had this special "third eye",
maybe it would allow them also to foresee the future of
music. IDM is extreme, but I'm sure they would enjoy some of
early Oldfield's or Vangelis' works, or John Cage-alike
music. This is pure nonsense speculation.

Beethoven perhaps, since he was an innovator.. his music was
considered ugly and horribly unbearable while he was alive.
Mozart just stuck to the rules Haydn had passed onto him and
used his genius to create a huge amount of work for such a
small life-span.

I doubt it for both of them though. There's too much of a
gap. Far too much. When you grow up in that sort of world,
with that sort of classical or romantic music being *ALL*
you hear, apart from the occasional traditional song, that's
the perception your brain has of what music is.

The music we're talking about - whether it's Cage or
Vangelis or Squarepusher or Philip Glass - is far,
far too different, in my opinion, from the music of
their time for it to be considered music.

Nice, we should make a seperete thread about this issue.
Considering all fields of art activity. Example: Polish
romantic poetry from XIX is stil very much alive in our
awareness, and still used as a reference point (even though
very modified) by modern poets. The question is of course:
does it works "backwards"? I belive this is some mutation of
alternative version of history entitled: what would happen
if Hitler had won the war etc, etc... Playing with time....
