How Much Music Do You Own?

Yeah guys. How much music do you own? I don't care about
mp3s, they don't count, but how much (original, uncopied)
CDs/records/tapes/minidiscs do you have in your possession?

For the record, I have:

a bit over 400 CDs
about 50 records
5 tapes I think
and 1 glorious minidisc, courtesy of Gescom.

My collection size is just about identical to your's Big Nev
except for the minidic. I've often considered buying it but
I don't have a player : (

About 400 CDs, but now I only use MP3s. SHITLOADS of MP3s,
and my burned CD collection is about 30, and will grow. I'll
never buy another actual CD again.

TrevorGod, I only actually bought my minidisc player for
that Gescom minidisc. I keep promising myself I'll use it
for something else.

I buy more CD's now that I can easily hear rare'r bands
because of mp3 file sharing.

I thought about doing that too. But buing a minidisc player
just for one disc seemed a little too ovrboard for me. If I
could somehow find another excuse to buy a player I'd be on
the gescom disc like a fat kid on a smartie

My minidisc player will come in useful one day, I'm sure.
I've made a couple of nice minidiscs in the last year. To be
honest, I just wanted my hifi to be "complete". With all the
units. Such a simple thing, but I feel so proud.

A friend of mine uses his minidisc player(s) for everything.
He has one in his car and 2 for his home. Maybe I should
buy one off him and then get the gescom minidisc.... hmmm
he's coming over in an hour, I'll have to discuss it with
him then.

You see, it might cost a damn fortune, but that's the
advantage of having a fair amount of CDs. Because you end up
having an entire wall of music, and you wake up every
morning and look at it and it feels damn good. I'm sure I
could have saved many hundreds/thousands if I'd stocked up
just with mp3s, but it wouldn't be the same. Hell, I want to
own something worth stealing.

I see what you mean about the CDs, I'm proud of my fairly
decent collection... lots of Beatles, Pink Floyd, Radiohead,
good stuff... but it just doesn't seem to matter to me
anymore, I'd gladly trade them in for my money back, and
just burn them again.

Different strokes for different folks, eh?

My CD collection is my retirement plan. When I get old
enough that I don't like good music anymore I'll sell all my
CD's and buy a solid gold yacht (complete with the solid
gold dancers) and sail off into the sunset : )

I have a theory though, that buying cds, especially if you
have a limited supply of money, makes for a better music
listening experience... for instance, back when I was in
high school, I got 10 bucks a week for allowance, and I'd
save it up to buy cds... so, I would look forward to when I
had enough, and would go over and buy the cd... it was
great... and the anticipation made the first listen so
excellent... also, because of the limited funds, I have more
time to listen to that one cd, and take it in... nowadays I
might buy two or three at a time, and you want to listen to
each of them, so you don't give each specific one as much
time as you'd like... with MP3's especially, you can just
download the albums, and you don't even have to wait for the
real release date, you can download it way before hand...
there's no anticipation, no excitement, well not as much...
just think of what Christmas would be like without the
anticipation... that's all the fun of it... anyways so yeah,
buying cds, especially with limitied funds, makes for a
better listening experience...

hmmm, let me put this into real economics terms:

The higher the opportunity cost, the higher the quality of
the listening experience.

Of course, one day just one single CD/DVD/something will be
able to hold every piece of music ever made and the only
reason we'll ever buy albums is for the fancy artwork. So
they'd better start making the artwork good because there's
no way I'm paying another £15 for a flimsy sheet of paper
with a crappy picture on it.

Well, I'm 23 and I've been buying music for about 5 years,
so with 400 CDs that's 80 CDs per year. I'm about 50/50 with
albums and singles so it comes down to less than an album
and a single bought per week, on average.

Just wait till I get a proper job and money though. If I
don't drink myself to death I'm going to have roomfuls of
CDs.

offline Ophecks from Nova Scotia (Canada) on 2002-02-22 02:01 [#00096689]

Of COURSE there's anticipation, I couldn't WAIT for Geogaddi
to be available in MP3 form! Listening to it after I
downloaded it was no less exciting than when I came home
with Wish You Were Here for the first time. It was brand new
music!

I see what you're saying, Funky, I agree with you,
actually... well said, it's 110% true. But Ophecks has been
tempted by the dark side, and has no need for your petty
''waiting games''... }:-)

I PERSONALLY haven't seen any decline in musical enjoyment.
On the contrary, I'm in musical ecstacy! Handing over 20
bucks to the dirty, zit faced cashier at MusicWorld is a
thing of the past for me. Music is more exciting than ever
for me now, cuz there's so much I can get, without shelling
out hard earned cash. Maybe the ''album anticipation'' you
speak of is something I miss, but it's a MORE than fair
trade off. I never could have afforded the PS2 and Metal
Gear Solid 2 if I actually BOUGHT the Analogue Bubblebaths
rather than BURNED them.

Anyway, your theory is great, well said, and so true. But
Ophecks has a different agenda... and I have to say, I like
screwing the record companies over. ;-)

Mp3's might not count in this little informal pole because
there is no "real" investment in them. Anybody can have a
harddrive full of mp3's after a weekend. Just a thought.

Don't ask me what I ment by the term "Real investment"
becuase I don't know.
