why listen to an ipod thru a sound system? why not just hook up a computer?
the main point of mp3 players is that they're portable.....

AAC i s better for encoding music, it´s a newer format with some improvements over mp3. It offers smaller size of the soundfiles and still better sound than mp3, several times I´ve seen this comparison: 256 Kbps mp3=128 Kbps AAC. AAC means therefore better sound and more space for your music on the iPod.
"i normally avoid ipod threads, cuz all people do is dis.."
Might be simple jealousy, irritation over the posing behaviour of all iPod teens/adult people desperate to be hip (there´s a lot of them!) and the simple fact that iPod is A BIT overhyped. Myself I can´t understand how people can be satisfied with a product with such limitations - the interface might be great, but the lack of radio, easy replaceable battery and decent headphone amp + it´s looks and general unruggedness makes it more something for a art museum than everday music listening?
(But anyway, most people don´t bother, though it puzzles me... I love what the iPod means for the financial resources of the world´s best computer manufacturer!)

I've never understood how people can say that people just get ipods to be trendy.
I think the desire to have you entire music library with you at all times is the reason why people get an mp3 player. Secondly the ipod is the most marketed of all the mp3 players... so the average person who doesn't know much about technology gets it, because its what they know is available.
Im not saying there aren't people who go with the ipod over some other mp3 player, just because its hip, but I think the ipod hating has become even more trendy then having an ipod.
Seriously, do I care if ToXikFB, b6662966, oyvinto, and mappatazee don't like ipods? No.
I just don't see the point of going around saying how you hate the ipod, for no reason. This guy was asking a specific technical question. He wasn't asking "what are your thoughts on ipods?"
this is why I think ipod bashing is becoming more trendy then the ipods themselves. you guys go out of your way to insert your distaste for them at every given opportunity.
Way to prove yourself guys! The anti-trend team gives you a HIGH FIVE.

iPod looks good, so there's the style. click wheels is excellent. sound quality is decent but not really better than much of the competition. battery life is bad, once the battery goes you have to send it away to be replaced.
battery life for me is the most important thing.

Leaving the ipod vs. other mp3-players discussion aside, i can say i think AAC files are good for what they are. That is, 128 kbps-compressed music files. Qualtiy-wise they sound (almost) as good as ogg 128 kbps files, which is normally waay better than mp3.
On the other hand, mp3 files compressed using lame with the standard preset, sound better than AAC. Normally, but not always. For some tracks the standard preset is just not good enough. Good examples are the HAB tracks that were on Bleep. Most of those tracks 'got stuck' at an average bitrate of 150 kbps. Which just plain sucks.
But to get back to my point: mp3 can sound better than AAC, but as a consequence the filesize is far greater than that of AAC.
on a sidenote: aac/m4p is a pretty new method, and still under development, whereas mp3 probably won't be seeing any big improvements.
