IMO the original version is far better from the new one. the original oompa-loompas had orange and green stripes. the new ones are all casted by the same actor, are digitaly shorten instead of the original dwarves and wear monocolored vynil colants.
the new photography is realy dark and not show how amazing the chocolate waterfall is as it was in the original.
everything in this new version is crap - apart from the television room wich contains stanley kubrick's space odyssey.

At least for me I keep the tendency of not comparing those two movies. I was aware before I saw the movie that if I compare them I will not fully enjoy anything because I’m too focused on nitpicking or disappointed in one or the other since it “didn’t do justice”. I personally like them both on their separate terms. The original was a great musical piece that I thoroughly enjoyed…especially the slow pacing song of ‘cheer up Charlie’. The new one, I viewed it as a regular Tim Burton film, dark and odd in its own way. I liked how they did more character development on Wonka’s part – even if some of it was not from the book.

i'm a fan of the old one... but i'm satisfied with the new one as well... i too went to the theatre to not nit pick the film... before the movie was released i didn't like the oompa loompa(s)... but in the movie told their story quite well and i learned to like them/him. through out the movie.

before his death, roald dahl criticised the 1971 film 'Willy Wonka', saying that it didn't capture the darkness of the book.
does the new release capture the darkness?
in the original film, i only sensed the darkness during the song on the boat, in the tunnel. Willy Wonka [the character] just seemed uninterested, rather than dark.
"not a speck of light is showing so the danger must be growing are the fires of Hell a-glowing is the grisly reaper mowing?
yes, the danger must be growing for the rowers keep on rowing and they're certainly not showing any signs that they are slowing!"
"pure imagination" is a fantastic song.

Yeah, the old one is much better. The quirky humor is lacking. I think Gene Wilder is missed. Perhaps someone like John Lithgow would have been a better Wonka.

I've had time to ponder, and I've decided I don't like the new one very much. I didn't like the Willy Wonka character very much, just seemed silly and that was that.

Yes, I'm almost certain John Lithgow would have made a better Wonka. He has that theatrical Gene Wilder thing going. I think Depp is cool, but way too reveared by everyone. Like he's some god.

Tim burton did it with "Planet of the Apes" and does it with Wonka too. Sure it looked good, had all the basics ingredient sof the origional and has the benefit of modern effects but ultimately... wheres the magic?
I could nitpick all day... the lack of songs, no lickable wallpaper, no charlie-in-the-soda-room scene, crap dialogue, un-freaked out parents, no buildup, wonka revealed too early, crap parents, charlie cast badly, needless Wonka backstory. But i won't.
In the end, the film just couldn't use its big budget to weave together a disneyesque magical story and atmosphere. Pants.

I mean, fuck, "agustus gloop, agustus gloop, a really big nincompoop"... i don't know if that was taken verbatim from the book or what, but the song sounded like it was written by fucking morans. And, Depp's rediculous facial expressions.. oh i don't know, really hokey imho. totally lacked class.

i thought it was pretty good. i felt like i was seeing a new movie, but i knew the story already. i didn't connect to the orginial as much as i thought i would. the oompa loompas didn't sit right for some reason. disappointed about the fizzy lifting drink omission.
