like an automatic - they pushed him to the floor, bundled on
top of him and unloaded five shots into him."

Buka-Buka! I'm not really bothered if he's innocent or not,
the police did the right thing.

Morale of the story:

If, shortly after two bombings in a capital city, armed
police shout 'stop' at you, don't run away.

Why would you suddenly run away from the police if you'd not
heard them? Maybe he was a deaf bloke who coeincidentally
started running for a train the exact same time the police
appeared, but I doubt it. Even if that's the case, the
police took an acceptable risk IMO.

They almost certianly shot him once he was already on the
floor for fear in the struggle he could still set off a
detonator on his person. Had he got down and kept his hands
where they could see, he'd still be alive now.

Had he been listening to AFX, it depends what release it
was- if it was smojphace, sure cap the sucker. If it was
Drukqs, they shouldn't have shot him.

yes, you were right though - your first post "innocent or
not they did the right thing" just seemed a bit harsh,
although you're right; as terrible as it sounds, it's true
that the "most efficient way to deal with a suicide bomber
is a shot to the head".

i'm surprised they unloaded 5 shots into him; could've been
taking a risk if he'd got explosives tied to his body.
unless they put all five in his head, which would have been
a very ugly mess :s

i don't like the idea of british police shooting people on
the tube. it's the kind of thing we let the americans get
on with - because of all the donuts they scoff the cops
can't run as fast as the criminals so they shoot them.

So he was innocent and not attached to either of the bomb
plots. The police made a huge blunder here.

I appreciate the necessity to shoot-to-kill suicide bombers:
since they set out on their mission to ultimately kill
themselves, there will be no reasoning with them and no way
for cops to negotiate.

Ceri JC wrote:

.. which is absolutely true and makes sense. However, the
police who went after him were in plainclothes -- i can't
speak for everyone else, but the reaction I would have to
being shouted at by people holding guns, in a country where
gun-crime isn't at all rare, would be to run like fuck.

Thoughts?

It's fucked up man...

Is it true that they shot this person from close by while
holding him in detain?

I read an eyewitness story about that.

Yes, the eyewitness reports are that he somehow stumbled
onto the tube carriage and they apparently pushed him onto
the ground OR he fell into the carriage, onto the ground.

Regardless of what happened, he was on the ground, the
policeman restrained him on the ground (kneeling on him
apparently) and shot him in the head five times.

There was an interesting statement from the police saying

"Well you can shoot them in the chest because that may be
where the bombs are and shooting them elsewhere could leave
them still able to activate the bomb. The only option is the
head.
"

Well technically this is true. I can't see why they couldn't
just pistol whip him. If he's unconcious then he can't
detonate it.

I still agree with the shoot to kill policy though.

It's unfortunate this person was innocent and that someone
else has died, sort of indirectly, because of terrorism.

offline Dannn_ from United Kingdom on 2005-07-25 04:25 [#01674390]

did they even confirm any shoot to kill policy before they
started defending this? I think it is disgusting that they
defend killing suspected suicide bombers when they've shown
they suspect people based on little more than a hunch.

"5 fucking shots..."

If you're shooting to kill, what does it matter? May as well
empty a clip into him. A headshot won't neccessarily kill
someone, in extreme cases they could still press a
detonator.

As redrum has pointed out, they were plainclothes, but even
so, the police would almost certainly of shouted 'stop,
police!' and flashed badges before giving chase. I'm not
sure they did this, if they didn't, then yes, it was
probably a bit dodgy.

To quote Giginger: "It's unfortunate this person was
innocent and that someone
else has died, sort of indirectly, because of terrorism. "

Agreed, I view it as the terrorists who did the bombing were
responsible for this man's death, rather than the police.

You'd stop for someone waving a weapon at you, not in
uniform, shouting "Police!"?

I dunno, I'm completely at odds with you there. Especially
if you were a foreigner in this situation, with poor
english. Instinct would take over.

It sounds like I'm trying to make excuses for the guy, but
I'm just explaining why I think it's totally reasonable that
he fled..

The best way to protect our freedom and to combat terrorism
is by having armed police tour the city gunning down any
foreigners that move. What better way to eliminate a climate
of fear than knowing that maybe you might get shot in the
head by armed police not in uniform.

I really disagree. I want to see this apologised for, and
not just 'sorry its nasty isn't it? yeah. We might do it
again, but its not our fault'. It's their fault. I don't see
any way around it. This should discourage shooting to kill
but the police have decided to dress it up as a statement of
how serious they are.

this is a really fuckin complicated case, isn't it? I don't
know, but are they doing a police-review-thing of the
shooting, or are they just saying: "no, sorry, we shot
someone but we had probable cause (or whatever that is
called), so we're not in the wrong." ?

Yes, I believe they'll be investigating the reason why they
were spying on and following a brazillian who had nothing to
do with terrorism.

I heard a figure quoted on bbc news that around 10% of the
met are carrying firearms now. That seems like a pretty high
percentage... makes you wonder how well trained they are.

If i had gang of men in plain clothes pointing automatic
weapons at my head, couldn't speak english too well... i
think it'd be an understandable panic-reaction just to run.
Probably irrelevent, but personal experience tells me not to
trust police in the slightest... at the same time i can kind
of understand their reaction too though, although i'm sure
ethnicity played a sizeable part in their decision. Which is
always just lovely.

It really is a climate of fear on many levels. We've already
had a bomb threat on a mosque in the past few days, i'm sure
looking forward to more vigilantism and darkie-shoots.

By the way, when it comes to suspected terrorists, the
police don't have to shout "stop, police" if they are in
their own clothes. If a group of beefy men, holding guns
started chasing after me I'd sure as fuck run off. He
probably thought he was going to get killed... which he did.

this is a new anti-immigration policy: all those foreigners
who've got expired visas / no visas at all had better watch

Pretty well- a mate is one of their armed officers and he is
very well trained. He also seems to be completely without
fear and I've seen him (unarmed) walk up to a bloke and take

What i meant was, i'd like to know the percentage of
officers carrying firearms before the attacks, in
contrast to the figure now. It's just that 10% seems a bit
...off. If they're handing out guns to coppers with only 2-3
weeks training, i'd find that a little worrying.

I read an eyewitness quote saying the armed police panicked
-- and looked panicked. Obviously this eyewitness may have
been a foreigner in which case they were probably lying
because a) they were selling illegal fags, b) they hate the
west and want to explode it c) they are here in our country
scrounging off the decent taxpayer while they drive around
in fancy cars stealing our jobs and women.

but, the cops had no idea either.. maybe the guy was running
cause his visa had expired, or maybe he had drugs on him, or
maybe he was running toward a bigger crowd to detonate his
bombjacket... they had to make that decision in like 11
seconds.

shitty situation.
