im having troubles picking up tunes to play on radio because the music i listen to is mostly real depressing (i love it though) so if i want to pick something different (something people actually listen to) it takes a lot of time, and i have hard time putting songs together - it takes me like 12 hours to pick for a 5 hours worth of music!!
i don't have this sort of troubles with depressing music - whenever i start making a mix or a compilation (for myself) i can do it real quick and it sounds good.
non depressing music just ain't my thing..
maybe this is going to change though :)
i wonder if this is a common thing around here..

it's for some local radio..and music they (we) play is by all means not happy music, infact it's quite mental and kinda hard to listen to. alternative music only, but still nothing like the music i enjoy when i listen to music alone.
some bands i included in list for this saturday: muslimgauze mike ladd james chance & contortions the fall durutti column mice parade boards of canada meat beat manifesto dj spooky public image limited pop group ulan bator michael gira nirvana calexico at the drive in four tet liars the kills wire gang gang dance luke vibert squarepusher triosk susumu yokota ...
maybe one day i'll get a chance to make a playlist based on my taste :)

Ulan Bator, NICE AS ICE.
A lot of my favorite music is ''happy'' or ''jolly'' or ''life affirming'' or ''peppy''. Probably not the majority of it... looking at my music, it looks like a huge chunk of it is dark... but my top four artists are The Beatles/The Free Design/Harry Nilsson/Soft Boys, and all of them are delightful.

i don't know, that changes real quick. atm i totally dig music concrete type of music but that would probably bore the hell out of everyone.
r40f, i wish they'd let us do that. there are certain rules we must follow - like playing 15-20% of old music, about 15% of domestic music (this is my bigest problem as i don't know of any cool domestic bands at all..there aren't any really) and like 20% of music that is in radios playlist (new stuff, atm; untilted, new meat beat manifesto, vibert, something new by gira,...).
i played couple of avantgarde tunes a couple of weeks ago and the editor said to keep that down to the minimum :) or at least to write some remarks about it so the listeners would understand..

well, i can squeeze in a few songs i really like so that helps. and you get to do that more after a while. it's the new ones that must follow the rules quite strictly. also, i want to be more involved in music, find out more stuff about it so this is really a good opportunity...also, when i'll be set to talk on air, i'll get to do an hour and two hours long shos here and there, where i'll be able to present music/artists i dig :)

Doesn't seem so bad... it's not that hard to craft a good radio show that doesn't totally reflect your tastes, maybe just one aspect of them. I'd do it for free even if I was really limited and not allowed to play anything ''weird'' or whatever. I assume Tol likes all those artists at least a little bit.

yes, definitely. i like all those artists, or else i wouldn't have picked them. but then again they don't have any music (or very little) that i love..but i'll burn them some of that :)
and, personally i'd be much more in favour on not having those rules. there are a lot of people doing this and if we would all pick our favourite music that would mean a lot of diversity which would be awesome imo. because the way it is now, it's pretty much similar music all them time. different tunes and artists ofcourse but it kinda sounds too much alike. although you can always tell a difference whether it was guy or a girl that was doing it :)

don't worry tolstoyed. you'll get yr own show, it just takes a time.
you should ask that editor if you can program late night/early morning playlists, they need to be calm and you can place all depression there.

weren't you talking about this a few months ago? :)
i'm exactly the same way really... sure i love happy music, but if i were to do a list of my all time favourites i'm pretty certain 2/3s or more would be pretty sombre stuff.... sad makes me feel best for some reason... and i'm not a sad person... just is how it is...

i just read through all of this, and it looks like you are running into the same problems i do... especially when it comes to playing domestic releases: i find this to be the greatest ass-pain in the world, and i'm complaining about Canada, whereas you are complaining about Slovenia which must be maybe a 10th as big (what is the population of Slovenia, anyway?)....
fortunately for me, the program director and the music director both seem to dig people who play out-there stuff and whenever i feel like maybe i'm pushing things a bit, usually one of them is like "wow, are you going to play all of this 20 minute song?! awesome!!"... and both of them just got their contracts extended, so i should be in good for at least a few more years... i think you shouldn't be afraid to play stuff you genuinely enjoy, so long as you can come up with something brief and creative to say about it, in order to give people a point of entry into the music... this is good, not only because it helps people have an idea of what to listen for, but also it gives them more of a chance to get to know you, and eventually they will end up trusting your tastes and hurling themselves at whatever you decide to play.
all the best Goran! i can think of few people who are better suited for this than you!

hmm, i could easily make 5 hrs worth of music with just canadian music but i can't come up with 40 decent minutes of slovenian stuff (we had some cool bands, back in the 80's but i can't keep playing same stuff over and over again). we're a country of 2 milion so there :)
and my editor is an awesome guy as well, and digs music, and also trusts opinions of people he worh with as long as you can stand behind what you say about it. it seems like, these two radios are really similar - both sort of educational which is awesome.
"and eventually they will end up trusting your tastes and hurling themselves at whatever you decide to play."
i'll break it to them easilly :)
