i have to call a department in the uk. any phrases i have
to stick to? or can i just say "HELLO, I'M XY, I CALL FOR
THIS AND THAT REASON".
i never made a phonecall in britain before. from my early
english lessons at school i remember that the person, being
called, first mentions his or her phone-number? so there ARE
some things different there (compared to germany) ..

my friends and i used to get prepaid calling cards and call
england (with numbers we got from 2600, hacker quarterly)

we'd basically say stupid things like 007, moneypenny, and
any other british thing we could think of at the moment.
yes, this was quite silly, but we we're kids.

this story probably isn't much help, but i must say everyone
we talked to was quite polite and i think we called a few
times when it was around 3 in the morning there. so just be
polite and don't worry...

Just ring them and say who you are and why you're calling.
If your spoken english is crap then it's the done thing to
apologise for it, ridiculous as that is. Most people don't
mention their phone no unless they're asked.

Personally i hate phones and wish they would all explode or
something, though. Phones make me panicsweaty.

Of course...

A couple of my favourites are

"If you ever want to see your daughter alive again
then...."

and

"I have been watching you all day, come to the window..."

not to mention the classic

"Hello, a nice seagull today became near to me..."

thinking about it, i have some as well...

"yes, i'll just go and get her for you"
"yes, i'll just go and get him for you" [less frequently
used]

Real ones I use...

"What's the weather like in India?"

"No, now is not a convenient time, just like every other
time you have phoned to offer me something I don't want"
(cheers Barclaycard)

That's the classic "you are boring me but politeness means I
have to indicate I haven't put the phone down and walked
away"
