If you discount Doug Yule's release 'Squeeze' under the VU moniker [most people do], are they the most perfect rock band ever? they released 4 perfect and diverse albums, with a further release of fantastic live recordings (What Goes On is by far my favourite), plus the 80s release of late material between White Light/White Heat and Loaded... Faultless.

i still haven't fully immersed myself in all of their albums yet, but i've really really enjoyed listening to VU and Nico for the last 6 months or so... i can't believe it took me so long to take the time. and of course, White Light/White Heat is excellent.

vu and nico, white light/white heat - fantastic albums.
loaded - mm, not really. no thanks. it's got sweet jane on it, which is a great song. not into this album otherwise.

you're right - that is the best tune on the record. thanks for pointing it out. :)
but still, the best songs on loaded pale in comparison to their earlier records. if i wanted to hear the beatles, that's what i'd play. but i can't stand the beatles.

i don't know... i have the "banana" album with Nico; i like a few songs (Venus In Furs...), a few others annoy/irritate me (Femme Fatale...), and i find the rest "ok" but not groundbreaking, a bit boring even. now i've heard it's an acquired taste... so i'll give that some other listens.

Years have passed and I think I appreciate Loaded, self-titled and even VU more than Nico and White/Light. Smarter songwriting and a nice timeless quality, not as dated. But it was still a flawless run.

There's nothing I appreciate more than a smartly crafted pop song, so naturally I prefer stuff like Sunday Morning and Rock and Roll over The Gift. But I go apeshit for everything they did.

They really quite an important band in music history, i think that is the point Paul was making.
I think you have to acknowledge that. Maybe...

I think one of the points of the velvet underground was that they could seemlessly fuse arty experimentalism with pure rock and roll - but you evidently are more the expert.

there's a song on the new oasis album that sounds exactly like VU's 'waiting for the man', such a rip off.
but yeah, the vu are legends.
