something for the fans of biosphere's substrata album..i've
read quite a bit about this dockstader fellow and he seems
like a real interesting person..and his music is just as
intriguing.

Tod Dockstader is one of the all-time great figures in the
world of musique concréte composition, with his "organized
sound" works from the 1960s being amongst the most radical
ever coneived -- in league with Schaeffer, Henry,
Stockhausen, and Varese. Aerial is a rare new work in the
realm of shortwave radio, from one of America's most
experimental composers. This release is the first (Volume 1)
in a three-part series. Volume 2 and Volume 3 will be
released separately and packaged in individual standard
jewel cases that will conveniently fit into the slip case
provided with Volume1. "I've written before of my interest
in shortwave radio. When I was very young, people got most
of their entertainment from radio. They called it 'playing
the radio,' as if it were a musical instrument. That's what
I've tried to do in this piece. About this time, a few
people encouraged me to look into using a computer for this
work. I'd never used one, but I saw it would allow me to
keep my mixes digital -- no more transfer losses. So, at the
end of 2001, I got a computer and an editing program for it,
and spent what seemed a long time learning it. I began
selecting mixes and loading them into the computer in late
March 2002. Out of the 580, I selected 90 'best' mixes --
eventually reduced to 59, the ones included on the CDs.
Finally, in assembling the CDs, I followed David Myers'
suggestion to allow each piece to flow into the next --
making a continuous journey to the end." ? Tod Dockstader,
14 September 2003.

This month's wire interview piqued my interest a fair bit,
i'm still meaning to give his stuff a proper checking out.
That link doesn't point to any samples but i searched for
aerial and really liked it and it was cool. He just went to
the top of The List.

So funny. I was researching Tod tonight. I was checking out
his travelling music. I love this guy's stuff. I want to
know more about his studio and how he did it all.
Travelling music has a thick warm evolving sound. Aphex
plays his stuff in live sets too. Some sounds I thought were
his they are so aphex, but they were instead Mr. Dockstader
.

brillant, la création du monde is a true masterpiece, i
needed time to get into it but its just mindblowing, wiked
(call me a stalker but after a quick search i found his
phone number, i thought about giving him a call to tell him
his records are awesome but that would be
ridiculous/freeky!!).

this particular album actually reminds me quite a bit of
Zoviet France, and maybe some Hafler Trio stuff...also maybe
Walter Marchetti... i would imagine a lot of his earlier
works (none of which i have heard yet, unfortunately) are a
lot less minimal than this... bein' mostly a musique
concrete guy, i figure a lot of his stuff is pretty busy and
jumpy... but who knows... anyhow you should definitely hear
other stuff by him... if you have trouble i can help you i
think.
