what do u use term electronica for? what term would you use
for aphex twin's music?

personally i differ between terms electronica and electronic
music. is this the same thing?

for example; if i say aphex was playing everything from hip
hop, d'n'b, jungle, gabba, noise and then his own music -
what term would this fit in?

"what term would you use for aphex twin's music?"

call it aphex twins music

"for example; if i say aphex was playing everything from hip

hop, d'n'b, jungle, gabba, noise and then his own music -
what term would this fit in?"

It'd be much more interesting if you could actually name the
tracks and artists rather than one lazy blanket term.

i say "electronic music", usually.

when i want to be more precise, i say "techno" for Chemical
Brothers, Fluke etc; "ambient" for Seefeel, Brian Eno etc;
"experimental electronic music" for weird stuff like
Autechre, etc. i don't know what to say for FSOL though.

i don't know what to say for Aphex Twin either.

especially because he has a dozen of different genres.

well, there's limited time so i can't go too much in
detail..i wish i could. i'll do it when/if they'll let me do
the afx show.

melack, that's an good idea there, although i don't know if
anyone but hardcore electronic fans would get what that
is..it's a nice term though..

i would say electronic music is a much wider term then
electronica. røyksopp is electronica. soft, melodic stuff.
but that's just my view. it's impossible to talk about
genres nowadays.

i think idm is a really pretentious term, i try not to use
it. Electronic music is my lazy blanket term. I do try, like
JivverDicker suggests, to name individual tracks and
artists, most of the time though.

that how i understand it as well.

murray, i don't like to use that term either, but that's how
it's known and everyone else uses it so i have to as
well..sort of..perhaps i'll be able to change this in the
future :)

ok. but how do you explain your music to a person that has
never heard of aphex/ae sort of music? i agree it sounds
stupid and pretensious with intelligent dance music,
braindance and complex potatomusic, but i don't like it when
people think i'm listening to tiesto and jumping around on e
because i say electronic music.

i usually say "electronic music", when i want people to
understand what im talking about (in spain most people is
still saying "techno" to everything, tho...). but for me the
correct word is braindance, what express something beyond, a
way to understand music, to make and listening, where styles
are nothing else than a base to have a beggining to
experiment... i dont like electronic music (there are lots
of artists i dislike), i like braindance (and what i
understand for braindance...). for me, its not a matter of
instruments or sounds or styles, its a matter of attitude,
of trying to do something new and interesting.

Try explaining how and why you make it, unless it is just
aphex/ae rip off.

i actually had to explain it for one of my professors at the
university, since she had been on my webpage looking for my
phonenumber, and i use this space as a temporarely mp3-site
for my music. i told her i was making some kind of
experimental electronic computermusic, which i sometimes
played from my computer for small audiences. she though it
sounded interesting. at least i felt like i had an excuse
for not working very much with my master thesis. i told her
that the music took very much of my time.

That sounds perfect! It's just boring when people think soo
little of music they describe it in such a drab manor. It's
like if I was asked what I had for dinner and replied 'some
brown stuff, a white thing with green bits'

When talking to people who have never heard anything similar
I'd just call it electronica. This is not due to any lack of
enthusiasm for the music but because a) they probably don't
care (on the spot judgement is needed to ascertain this
however) and b) (which I've mentioned before) I'm crap at
describing music.

Fortunately, most of the time I don't need to consider it as
almost no-one is interested in the music I listen to :)

I think I would say ''electronic music''. I think. I would
hate to say that to someone and have them think I'm a big
Moby/Darude fan. I don't have much experience chatting in
real life about electronic music. I think I'd mention
Intelligent Dance Music just to see what kind of reaction it
gets, but I'd keep my tongue in cheek about it.

I usually say "electronic music, but not the boring
repetitve stuff you're tihnking of, you'd have to listen to
it to understand"

I always feel like such a twat afterwards, like I'm looking
down on htem or something, patronising them, but I'm not
exactly lying am I? (unless they're a braindance type fan
themselves)
