So, just saw this. A couple people here seemed interested
back when the trailers popped up, so I thought I might as
well post my thoughts. First off, the story didn't seem very
speiburgian at all, untill the end. It was very dark and
bleak, and there were plenty of scenes of people disolving
under the alien heat guns and having their blood drained
and shit. Tom Cruise didn't even ruin it.

Anyways, if you were considering going and seeing it, you
don't have to worry about it getting too harmless..

What is the sound track like, I was particularly drawn to
the JMJesque synths. Should I buy it?

I didn't really take too much to it... it got a bit too epic
at times...

Well, in all honesty, I didn't notice it untill times when
it got epic. Usually, I am drawn to the more ambient
stuff...

ok, i'm not really a great fan of ambience myself, a little
too slow paced and relaxed for me.

Actually I think i'm talking about the wrong thing, I was
talking about the musical, sorry about that, should have
read your post *embarrassed*.

I relly want to see the film it sounds good, even by Tom
Cruise's standards :)

the thing i dislike most about spielberg is the way he deals
with human emotion. he really tries to forcefeed it to the
audience.

things move a little too quickly for it on the most part,

it's definitely THERE but it's pretty well hidden by the
sheer pace of the thing, plus the main character is an
unsentimental dick for hte most part, which actually made it
better (IMO)

The only thing that is used in the movie is the intro of the
journalist as the voice over in the beginning of the
movie.

"No one would have believed, in the last years of the
nineteenth century, that human affairs were being watched
from the timeless worlds of space. No one could have dreamed
we were being scrutinized, as someone with a microscope
studies creatures that sworm and multiply in a drop of
water........"

I guess it's exactly the same as the H.G. Wells novel.

the story was lame... apparently, everything is extremely
convenient for Tom cruise and life is a bitch for everyone
else.

*SPOILERS*

hey, all the cars are dead, waht will we do? oh, I somehow
guessed what part would need replacing, lets just take this
one and drive as far as we can. Lucky for us every car on
the road will be pulled off to the side to allow us a clear
lane down the middle for miles.

...later...

hey lets get aboard this ferry, oh wait the guards are
saying theres no more room. NO PROBLEM! *shitty camera angle
closeup from waist height makes it impossible to tell how
Tom and friends are able to instantly bypass the same
roadblock that dozens (hundreds?) of crazed rednecks have
been trying to get through* well we're on this boat now,
things should be clear sailing from here on. Wait, the boat
just capsized, we stayed together AND got hit in the face
with a car and we're still unscathed. lets just swim to
safety while the robots exterminate ALL OTHER traces
of life.

...later...

hey they've got my daughter, I suppose that, in throwing
this one grenade at them, even though doing so has been
completely ineffective thus far and will identify me as a
threat, the aliens will most likely want to capture me,
allowing me to take explosives past their defenses, rather
than annihilate me instantly.

still later...

hey, we'll we made it to grandma's house, somehow and
against all odds. miraculously it is completely untouched by
war, even though the surrounding city is in ruins, oh and
look, everyone's here, including Robby, who we last saw
being swallowed up in a BALL OF FUCKING FIRE.

the special effects were amazing, the acting was pretty
decent, the plot was horrible. I don't think I even need to
mention how idiotic it is that the machines were buried
underground, it's just too stupid for words.

I have it too. I bought a reissue on cd a few years back.

I used to listen to the original on vinyl when I was young
and especially the first 15 minutes would scare the shit out

the reissue I have consists of 2 cds, one with the "War of

of "Dracula". I never listened to the last one, you just
reminded me.

haven't seen the film, but a review I read in a Dutch
newspaper did mention that everything seemed to go his way
much too much - the critic especially mentioned how cars
were getting blown away all over the place and Cruise steps
out and finds a completely unblemished car waiting for him,
he even hinted at possible product placement.

I have some questions about this film.

How is it that the tripods were burried underground millions
of years ago but remain undedected despite a massive
civilization being built upon them complete with tunnels,
subways, and drilling?

How does a clearly more technologically advanced species
somehow not realize they lack the biology to survive on
earth? A plot weakness simular to the one that emerges in
the climax of 'Signs', where the invading aliens are detered
with... water.

Why tripods that walk instead of aircraft? I understand this
is a remake of a classic sci-fi movie, however, when the
movie was made the expectations of the audience were
obiously much lower. To see these amazingly well crafted cgi
images of walking tripods and ray blasts, make me feel as
though they were symbols of another reality far lost, and
unable to incorporate itself in to this present one very
well.

Its not as though i was critiquing the thing while i was
watching it, but these issues made the film feel cheezy and
started to fuck with me during the movie. I almost expected
a dude in a spacesuit made of aluminum foil to come out of
the space ship.

"How is it that the tripods were burried underground

subways, and drilling?"

good point, and more importantly, if the aliens planted the
robots underground thousands or even millions of years
before that, how did they know EXACTLY where to plant them
so that they would emerge in the middle of populated
cities?? it makes absolutely no sense. Further, where was
the mothership that somehoh 'lightning beamed' the aliens
down? If it was far a way, then we're meant to believe they
can lighning-beam things from great distances (hard to
believe) or, if it was in orbit around earth, then we're led
to believe that NONE of the earth's observatories or missile
defense systems picked it up (also hard to believe, unless
it was 'cloaked' somehow).

"How does a clearly more technologically advanced species
somehow not realize they lack the biology to survive on
earth?"

yeah, especially since they were planning the damn thing for
millions of years. the only thing I like about the downfall
of the aliens of WotW was that, in the end, the humans did
barely anything to them, and still never found a legit way
past their shields. I like to think that the aliens will
pack up their shit, take it back to the drawing board, and
come back to finish us off in another 10,000 years or
something.

I hated the conclusion to signs, because there is water in
the atmosphere and as humidity in the air... how did that
not effect those, but a glass of water spilling off a table
does?
