ok. I'm going to help a friend out on saturday (I'll stand
in the back and browse records mostly, which bascially is
all I can do right now, but he says he's going to have me do
some things if he got to go to the toilet or have a drink or
whatever), and I keep thinking that I have no real skills (I
can do SOME live mixing, but it always takes me a long time,
and I don't know how or when to make the transitions when
it's "live"... keep fucking up and doing a long transition
when it should've been a short one and vice versa), and I'll
probably fuck things up...

so.. what I'd like are a few tips and tricks, and perhaps
some tracks that I can match that are good for practice
(don't give me tracks with the same base bpm, though, as
that's too easy)...

-When attempting long mixes, pay attention to the eq's to
prevent re-enforcement. eg.Kill bass on one track as
bringing in next tracks bass, or fade bass eq's at same
time, 1 in one out.

- Never mix vocals over eachother unless particularly
gifted

At the end of the day most crowds don't give a shit about
your mixing ability, they are there to hear good records.
It is a nice bonus when successfully mixing two tracks but
don't let that determine the tracks you play. Like passing
on an excellent track that will work the floor just because
you cant mix it.

I always work by rule of three when playing in general i.e
none Specialist chinstroker venues. Switch music style
every three records, unless something is really working.

This keeps the ladies happy, your most important crowd
members, get them dancing and it doesnt matter what you are
playing, every dude will be on the floor with them within
minutes.

great! thanks! I'll keep that eq-stuff in mind.

we'll most likely be mixing hip-hop most of the time.. and
the other guy will most likely be doing most of the stuff,
but I just wanted to be prepared as he said I'd be doing
some things... the only bad thing for me right now is that I
only got one turntable, so I have to mix with the pc on one
channel and the turntable on the other, only being able to
manipulate the table...

You will do fine, good luck with it...Just think if you
don't fuck up during your short sections in the limelight,
they might ask you back....no pressure :)

The worst thing about DJ'ing is shit song requests from
pretty girls. They never believe the old lies of "Sorry
luv, must have left that at home, good track tho! (Can i
still sleep with you?)"

"Sorry I've already played it"

They go through your record bag and insist on pushing stuff
on the mixer.

My favourite was a girl coming up and saying "My god, I've
never seen so many knobs....Can I touch them?"

hahaha! if I bring my records, there's no danger of me
actually having any shit records, though, so they can browse
the bag as much as they want! heh...

anwyay, I hope I can make the other guy mix in some stuff
that I actually know before he lets me take over, as it's
much easier to know when to mix the next one in if I
actually know when the lyrics stop...

when its going well do at least one drop. just press
start/stop and whack the other song into the good bit. leave
half a second, so the crowd have a small time to think
before pow! a wicked tune they all know, and its at the good
bit too

haven't got any lfo, and it'll be hip-hop anyway, I
think...

dave: you mean doing like those "BAM! ITS A GREAT TUNE"
thingies with the crossfader? where I exchange every kick
from the currently playing track with the other track as an
anticipation of what's coming up?

anyway, we're both just there to show off.. the other guy is
trying to get booked, and I'm tagging along hoping to
develop some skills and maybe get booked too later on...

yeah something like that. Its fun. Also don't do lots of
scratching or turning the table off and letting it
slooooooooooooooow down, cos that gets annoying. scratch a
bit like 30 secs of it, then stop for 10-15mins don't wanna
over do it, cos it can distract from the music.

make sure the monitors or speakers are set up so you can
hear the high frequencies or else mixing is hard when you
only hear the bass!

don't forget the most important thing, which is to relax.
its not the DMC, so no one is judging you, if you cock it
up, like get galloping when mixing, just grab one and do a
rewind and fade down, like you were just messin or
something, they won't know, but if you let it go on for too
long they will realise the beats are out of time.

just use your instinct, if you really need to change between
vinyl and they aren't beatmatched, do a quick switch and
either fade in/out kinda fast, or just move the crossfader
over.

Whatever you do, dont do long mixes! Nothing sounds worse
than 2 dif songs playing at the same time at different
speeds for more than 5 secs.

Another trick:

turntable A is playing the music, start monitoring turntable
B in the headphones and stop it at the beginning of the
beat. Let the B table spin while holding the vinyl down (so
the music is held at the beginning beat still but the plate
is spinning underneath dont push it down too hard or the
plate will slow down or stop entirely
Then, put the
crossfader in the middle and get your hand ready to raise
the volume of B, when A stops let go of B and raise the
volume (dont forget to kill the A table - you dont want both
playing at the same time)

Anyways the point of this manuever is to have a fresh song
come right in after the other one is done playing. They dont
have to even be beatmatched, just bring in B after all the
vocals on A are done but before the song ends entirely. By
skipping ahead to the start of the beat on B the audience
wont even remember the last song when they hear the start of
the new one. You also avoid any intros, or other random
stuff this way and most importantly no long crappy mixes

great thanks!

the only tech I've got nailed is almost the one you
mentioned.. it's beatmatched, and I hold the start of the
next, set the fader to center, and when a chorus or part
with no drums/no voices kicks in, I start the next one, and
when the vocals on that one kicks in, I just kill table A
immediately.. it's not too clean, but it works... also I can
only do it if I know the song inside out, as I have to know
when the chorus starts and so-on...

I'll keep what you said in mind for when I don't have the
time to beatmatch.

The crowd is jumping as the beats come to an end
Rewind the track and start over again
Hands are in the air, there are lots of happy faces
The beats take your body and mind to different places
Don't let the groove stop, got to make the joint rock
This set is designed to put your body in shock
It's so funky you have to move your behind
Now give a shout to the D.J. - Rewind!

The people shout for more of that crazy rhythm
They know what they want and you know what to give them
This is what you do, put your finger to the wax
Flick of the wrist and spin the needle back
The track is so fresh it's almost finger-licking
The bassline is tuff and the beats are kicking
A better record it would be hard to find
So give that shout to the D.J. - Rewind!

Rewind the track, spin the record and take it back
Rewind the track, spin the record and take it back
Rewind the track, spin the record and take it back
Now that you've got the knack, take it back

Rocking a party is no easy matter
The hands of the D.J. must select the right platter
If he doesn't then it's fatal, and it makes me weep
To see people on the dancefloor falling asleep
So get up off your ass and move your feet to this track
No excuses, don't refuse this, there's no room for the slack

Go with the flow, 'cos it's a state of mind
When you shout to the D.J. - Rewind!

I like it best when the beats are naked
The rhythm pumps and there's no way you can fake it
Ah yeah, that's just the way I like things
The show must be over before the fat lady sings
So listen up everybody, get on the floor
And give it up 'till you haven't got any more
One more thing, could you be so kind
As to shout to the D.J. - Rewind!

Rewind the track, spin the record and take it back
Rewind the track, spin the record and take it back
Rewind the track, spin the record and take it back

As KADO says: Your mixing skills are not important at all,
it's the choice of records what's more important.

You need to feel the vibe of the audience.
It's important to know the records you have so you can go
into any direction you want to go... I guess you don't know
your friends records, do you?

You already have some experience with mixing so be sure you
really know which records your friend have and everything
will be ok!

Don't try to 'lead' the crowd too much. Have some humility:
I know it sounds cheesy, but try to follow the vibe of the
place and play what suits how they're doing. Trying to get
people onto the floor by shooting your load and playing
something like 'DJ Jean - The Launch' too early is
counter-productive. No one wants to be first on the floor,
dancing alone to euphoric trance.

It's a myth you should play what you want and that's the key
to DJing success: utter balls. Unless you're at a particular
night/venue/radio station specialising in that sort of
music, or you're big enough that people have come to see
you play, it doesn't work. By all means educate the
crowd a bit with an occassional 'alternative' track and play
things that you like that are popular and commerical (I find
there's at least one track in the top 40 each week that I
like, play that sort of stuff), but playing a set consisting
solely of Ae, Merzbow and BoC in a dance/house club will at
best make the crowd leave the dancefloor and at worst get
you forcibly ejected from the club with a kicking from the
bouncers at the order of the management.

Everything Kado has said is spot on, particularly about
girls. Girls are the key to a full floor. Once the boys are
on the floor, you can get away with a few drum and bass
tracks that'll generally keep the boys, but lose some girls,
so long as you then bring the girls back with some pop/rnb
etc. Boys will generally not get on the dancefloor/return to
it after going to the bar/bogs if there are no ladies
present.

Re: girls going through your box. I sometimes padlock my bag
shut for this reason and just leave the next 2 records out.
I've also been slapped for asking a girl to 'Please fuck
off' when she came in the booth and started fannying around
with the amp. I then got security to have 'a word' with her
and it didn't happen again. >:-D

great stuff guys! thanks!

aestethics: well, of course I know some of his records, as
we share the same passion for hip hop (although he's more

have no idea how long we're going to play, but I'll just

ceri: yeah, that stuff with playing what the crowd wants is
what I figure will be hardest, as I despise most of the
stuff that's on the hit charts here in norway right now.. I
just hope it's a sensible crowd.. heh...

hahaha! it kind of flopped tonight! we show up at 22, as the
guy told us, but he isn't there.. so we go outside and watch
a great free outdoors concert with bertine zetlitz and then
later we go back.. the guy is there, but he tells us he
hasn't got vinyl decks yet, only cd-thingies, so he
apologizes and gives us free beer and then he tells us he'll
have them by next saturday, so we're going back then...

oh, well, more time to pracitce I guess! It was a good
night, though.. got free alcohol and the total sum of the
evening amounts to 0,- PLUS we're going back on saturday and
we'll probably get more free alcohol then in addition to
playing if he's got the decks.. the drunkenness may have
impaired some of the logical structure of this post, but
don't let that stop you! go out and have fun!
