so this is the first volume in a series?
i wanted to buy it and i saw there was a "penultimate hitchiker's guide to the galaxy" too, which would combine five episodes/novels...
are the sequels good? all related or independant? (haven't read anything of it so far.)

get all of them in one volume. my experience is that it hardly costs more than just buying one book.
and there's some fun stuff in there (except the last one, which is kind of a downer - Adams pretty much realised this and said there would probably be a 6th part for which he was already amassing material and then he died.)

Feel free to buy the full trilogy of 5 thought after 3 they go poo. The "Penultimate..." volume also contains an amusing foreward and a short Zaphod-related story.
All the novels are part of a story and follow on from one another. The first three are undoubtably the best.

the fourth one is weird. but doesn't it have the last message from God (don't worry, I won't spoil it)?
I remember reading that you'd soon get to see what the final message from God was to the universe and I was thinking "whatever can he think up that'll live up..?" and what he did think up completely satisfied me. right on the money.
yes, Douglas Adams satisfied me.

Yeah, the fourth one works better as a novel and it has it's occasional moments of humour, but only occasional. If you read it not expecting it to be funny you'll probably appreciate it more, but I was left decidedly unsatisfied. The fifth one I liked more but that was likely cos after four the only way was up.

the fourth one is weird because of the romance aspect, I think.
the fifth one just ends so grimly, I really didn't like that as an ending to the series.
the beginning of the fifth is great though, with the aliens who travel through space on ships that run on Bad News.

It wasn't the romance that spoiled it. I was quite happy for Arthur to get some fenny. I just didn't find it anywhere near as funny as the previous ones.
'Dirk Gentlys Holistic Detective Agency' and 'The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul' are also pretty good, though the humour is more reserved.

yeah, it's a tired joke which the publishers have tried to sell it on through the years.

oh I didn't mind the romance itself per se, but it just ground the whole thing to a halt, it seemed.
it felt like what really should've been a subplot that was made into the main plot.
the Dirk Gently books are excellent, I think. I once downloaded these huge mp3s of Adams reading the full "Long dark tea-time". it was great.

The radio series is the best! It only covers just the first book I think, but still you gotta love those 1970s analogue sounds :D
Mind you, the books are still fantastic. I agree, the 5th's ending was a bit unexpected really!

The original radio series 1 & 2 are very vaguely parallel with books 1 and 2, though will some significant sections of the radio series not in the book and vice versa. The third radio series is pretty much exactly the third book.
The two remaining books haven't been in any radio or TV series

all 5 books are great...the first 1 and a half books were made into that tv series, and it was ok, but it left questions unanswered that were covered in the books...
Loved the part about the guy in the cave that kept reincarnating and getting killed by arthur over and over again :)

I spoke to Martin Freeman at the bar in the theatre where I act about three months ago as he was paying a visit. He mentioned that he was particularly disappointed with the editing in the film version of 'Hitchhikers...' and some of the camera work, although he still insisted it was a good film and he was proud to be part of it etc.
hes a great guy, basically plays himself in 'The Office'. Also bought be a drink too, it was an honour ^_^
