what do you think of them? i was(am) quite a fan, but
somehow i find them to be much more shallow than massive
attack for example? is it just me?

I was lucky enough to catch a live show before they split,
absolutely devestating amounts of bass.

It was a really cool performance aswell not just hiding
behind a rack of synths, they were playing live drums and
ting.

the two of them? or did they get a proper drummer?
the bass is wicked on records already..i can only imagine
what it must have sounded like live :)

but first two tracks of the first album are top in they
career

Just the two of them + vocalists coming on for individual
tracks. Shame they split....Maybe there will be a reunion
ala Spice girls in a few years

well, they were sort of pop band so reunion is quite
possible :)

I liked one track off the first album, the really spacey
mellow one, can't remember the name , haven't really liked
anything else, a little overhyped and overrated IMO

yes, it's a term to define anything that diverts from the
mainstream, rather ironic that it's being used by the band
in question me thinks.

weird... then an album put dowwn as "leftfield IDM" in the
store deviates from mainstream idm?

I'll have to check what leftfield idm sounds like then..

I got into leftfield a long time ago when the song "rhythm
and stealth" was used on the animated series "beast
machines." the only thing I liked about that show was the
intro music.

I guess any genre has it's populist elements I.D.M being no
exception.
BOC,Plaid and Bola are pretty mainstream in that they are
pleasant to listen too whereas something like
Mandelayev,Squarepusher and Venetian Snares are fairly
challenging and therefore could be considered more
leftfield.

I guess the more wigged out it is and the more it defies
convention then the more it edges towards being "leftfield"
though let's face it ANY I.D.M. except for perhaps Aphex and
BOC isn't really in any danger of seting the charts on fire
just yet.

ok

leftism vs rhythm & stealth

two of you say you prefer rhythm & stealth. from the moment
i got leftism i loved it. i heard rhythm & stealth at a
party, i was sitting on the floor in front of a
speaker&subwoofer, really really fucking wasted, and loving
it. got a loan of it and brought it home, and hated it.
never listened again.

could you reccomend the best tracks from rhythm & stealth?
cause i know i'm missing some goodness, there WERE some
animal beats i heard that night, but i just forget...

yes, in fact, i thought that was on leftism.

that was the very first leftfield track i heard, on an o2
(mobile phone company) ad. i even emailed them to find out
what it was..

any others apart from that?

offline Drunken Mastah from OPPERKLASSESVIN!!! (Norway) on 2005-06-28 08:31 [#01646499]

hmm, I'd say it doesn't necessarily have to be pleasant to
listen to to be "mainstream" within the genre of idm. ahpex
and autechre aren't always "pleasant" (in the sense that it
has fast beats and all of that.. it's pleasing to me, but
probably not "mainstream pleasant" as boc and stuff like
that).

so, then, the only thing that I can think of being leftfield
IDM would have to be maroon 5.
