just a question.. it's probably been asked before, but I couldn't find anything... what makes a good noise track and what makes a bad one? links/samples would also be helphful, although this is only for my own curiousity...

i would recommend you some Wäldschengarden for your first real noise experience. its hard to put in words, i think my relationship with noise is more a mood thing then anything else. it creates some vibes, inspiring thoughts and stuff like that. also theres senseless noise like merzbow, speedranch and jansky, but sometimes i dig that too.

oh, I've listened to noise, and I don't really like it, I'm just wondering what makes something good and what makes it bad...

its really about finding something you like, something you can make sense of. basicly, get people to name a lot of noise artists and try them out.

this is not an easy question. sometimes i wonder this, too. I don't know where to find some noise theory if there is any, but if there are experimental music PhDs like Alla Zagaykevych, Massimo Magrini and others, there maybe has to be some theoretical basis, or how did they pass their exams without it.
[I heard several noise artists whose sound seemed to suck (let's not reveal their names) - their music was simple noise with not much changes in it. While good noise tracks have some structure, and utilise not only white noise but some drum-like pulses, maybe rhythm sometimes. Noise tracks try to operate with mood of listeners, as for me - surprising them, frightening, lying to them (you get absolutely not what you expected), teasing and making angry. They put a listener into a sonic field, where his/her body comes into contact with intense air oscillations.]

You can't be harbouring a set of parameters to what makes good music/noise, just listen to some artists and find out. What were you expecting people to answer to this question? I'm curious.

I want to know what makes a good noise track and what makes a bad one. I don't want track recommendation as much as I want examples.
so elaborate on that frequency and dynamics thing...
torture garden: well, it all sounds bad to me, so of course I'm curious as to what people enjoy about it and also to fully understand what they enjoy, I need to understand what they don't enjoy. I've tried noise, and it wasn't to my liking, and I'm not trying to get into it...

Drunken Mastah be sure to check this megahit by Kotra. (possibly you heard it already) If (you heard it and don't like noise) {noise is not for you indeed}. Else {we'll see} instructions: play it LOUD :)
ps. not trying to get you into it - just wanna PRopulse this excellent track worldwide.

Interesting noise makes interesting noise. I can't really say what makes it interesting though. I like noise that sort of reminds me of a sound without actually being that sound. Like a fizz or hiss that's sort of like rain or a buzz that's either a fly or a person being electrocuted. Then there's stuff like Hijokaiden that's just so gross that you have to respect it. More often I just like noise that's really just a bunch of logical noises setting an obvious mood, Gothy stuff like Asmorod or Rasthof Dachau. I don't really like Merzbow because often it's too random for me. Promotion Man is the toppermost of the poppermost though.

I like patterns emerging within noise, I'm thinking about some Merzbow tracks like 1930 & Suzumebachi No Kinbu. I'm no noise veteran, but I would think that the only way to get anything from it would be to keep on going back to it.

noise is all about freqs and dynamics for me.
like, masonna for example...he is one of the best noise artists i came accross because of the heavy dynamics and frequencies which i want to hear in noise music.
k2, merzbow, gomikawa, guiltiy connector are kind of boring!
why...just because they emitt all the wrong freqs.

i dunno... i don't really agree with the idea of noise as something non-musical at all... people often want to set it in opposition to music when in fact it's just one aspect of it which has manifested itself in many forms throughout history (imo, obviously).
there are explicit melodies in a lot of noise that i enjoy, and really i'm not so sure where one would define the parameters between melody and non-melody so... i'm inclined to say that there are also many beautiful not-so-explicit melodies in a lot of noise that i enjoy.... the way various tones are coupled, not only in terms of their relationship to one another, but also to the surrounding sound space (how does a sound reverberate? is it in the foreground, in the background, etc.) is stuff that is pretty important to me. i like noise that appeals to my sensations in more subtle ways... it's all fine and dandy to have your head blown off by Merzbow in Masonna... but these days, i'm much more interested by someone like Dion Workman, or Joe Colley, where there choices may not even be audible and yet still very palpable. even when it's full-on noise, i find the smaller changes at the eye of things to be generally of more interest. noise at its best really does evoke something more than just random sonic detritus... for me, it seems more like larger forms, that are hopefully simultaneously interesting for the microscopic details (ie: texture) and the macroscopic (big, general) aspects (ie: dynamics, the way sounds will collide with one another, the general harmonies created through the addition of all tones and overtones, etc, etc).
for me there is very little that seperates noise from most ambient music, and most of my favourites reflect that leaning, i think.
