windows XP random restarts.

I got my first windows XP PC a while ago, and around 3
months in the damn thing would randomly restart, no matter
what I was doing, at random points. I thought it was just
that one computer, but I've now seen machines at colledge do
it, and my laptop, and another computer. None of them were
old or faulty.

What is this strange, annoying phenomina? There's nothing
fucking worse then working on a track, and having a random
restart corrupt the file-loosing hours and hours of work on
the music. :-/

Sounds like they are crashing without doing the ol "blue
screen of death"

Never had this 'random restart' problem so I cant really
help out too much.

obvious things would be running anti-virus and spyware
detection thingies.

otherwise a google search yielded these results:
1
2
3

and many more.

check control panel > administrative tools > computer
management > event viewer
and look under Application and System for errors and see if
it indicates any app or drivers that are failing just before
the restart.

Ah, thank you.

The only reason I meantioned it here was because it's
occured on so many machines I have used (and other people's
computers.) I thought it might be something up with the
platform.

do you have:

[ ] randomly reboot without warning

checked in system prefs? i think it's on by default in XP.

thanks for all the suggestions.

It's a love hate with computers. Always has been, and I
think it always will be.

I used to have that problem before I upgraded my ram. i
thought it might have been a virus or a hacker or something,
but after doing thoughrow scans and virus checks I
determined it wasn't either. I don't know why or how it
happened, but the ram fixed it.

Normally it is either down to poorly written programs or
virus' that begin attempting to access an area of memory the
shouldn't, windows will shut down to protect itself or a
hardware issue such as overheating or fault RAM/processor.
In either case I don't care.

That's odd, actually. I had less problems when I had 512
megs of RAM. I got 1024, and Half Life2 started crashing
with "memory read errors" and the restarts intensified in
how often they occured.

The other PCs which enjoyed restarting and destroying music
files have always had 512 to 716 (or whatever the exact
number is) RAM.

try opening it and see if the ram is properly attached...

while you're in there, get the names and specs and whatever
of your ram.

the hardware extraction layer has had that problem stopped
since windows 2k (the memory overwrite thing) it reaches the
os before it reaches the hardware and windows closes it
down, (it's also the reason that all of the old dos and
95-98 era applications have trouble working)

or at least it's SUPPOSED to...

I've found the most common problem is a power supply not
powerful enough, that's just from my experiences though...

Thanks, I think it must be the power supply. That, or
overheating.

I've tried everything else. Never had these problems with
windows 98 strangely enough, and I was a lot more daring
with my old PCS (fucking about with the inside components a
lot more.)

It's a longshot, but have you made sure the drivers are up
to date on all your hardware, especially your sound card?

I have a Creative Audigy Player 5.1 card and if I install
the drivers supplied with the CD then the PC will reboot
randomly, or if I play a song in Winamp - however if I
update the drivers the PC is ok! :)

I think however, that if this is happening on your computers
in college and what have you, then it would be something
else?

i have that problem every few months or so. it's because a
mountain of dust gets all up in my heatsink. so i'll pull it
all apart, blow it out, and it works fine again. should
probably give that a go. just to see. i blame the culprit to
be overheating.

your fans may not be up to speed if they are clogged up with
dust. clean the inside of your computer with a hand held
hoover, make sure it's switched off first though. DON'T use
a normal vacuum cleaner, only a rechargable one.

i had the same thing happen to me right after i installed
ram...just switch it around so the largest is in the first
slot...that fixed it right up.

This forum probably isn't the most direct way to solving
your problem. Try googling some of the model numbers for
the gear you have, primarily the motherboard, and some of
the symtoms. See if there is a BIOS update or other drivers
you need to update. Also, there's probably an option
somewhere in your BIOS which is set to "restart on crash" or
something. You can disable that and might get more detailed
error messages from Windows when the crashes happen again.
