i'm not sure musician's the right word... well, as i say, I'm not sure.
i'd call him a producer rather than a musician, but i guess you'd say that was pedantic.

Not even close, never was. But I do think he's pretty FUCKing good. Maybe in my top 30-40 favorite artists or something, but nowhere near my number 1.
I barely listen to him anymore but it's not because I'm bored of it or anything, I just ration it. I'm still impressed and stimulated everytime I put on vordhosbn or girl/boy or w'ever.

I will always love Aphex for his genius music and the fact that he introduced me to the IDM world.
But the fact is, noone makes better music than Autechre.

kind of ironic (don't you think). because they were limited to only a one hit song. but in a way their suckyness was unlimited so i guess the name kind of works, if you look at it that way.

he never has been my favourite really, I place him in the average to good category of my mental music critique with a slight leaning towards shit on occasion.
I thought he peaked around "RDJ LP" and I really liked SAW 1 & 2 when I first heard them but his music never really has a really lasting effect on me, it's not robust enough to withstand repeated listens over a very long period of time IMO and gets old very quickly, he's got the advantage that he's so prolific but I prefer quality over quantity any day.

SAW I will always be an important lp for me, but having listened to a lot of his other stuff recently, I find him a bit hit and miss. When he is good, he is fantastic, but i feel there is a lot of filler in some of his releases...........
So is he my favourite musician, no. Ae take that spot, beacause of the quality they have produced at each stage of there career.

Everything Richard does/did, I found someone else that does/did it better. But he's sort of a jack of all trades. One of the things I'll remember fondly is how interesting it was to dig through his discography all those years ago, very educational. I'm sure it was that way for some other younger IDM n00bs. Very eclectic, a good hub into all kinds of genres and sounds.

Q. is aphex my favourite musician? A. no
yes he once was. and now id rank autechre over him.
i first discovered aphex with the trance europe express volume 1, 4 x vynil mega pack back in the strange and beautiful days of 1993.
it came with a cool booklet that talked about some guy that had his own tank.
the track on that record was a special version of analogue bubble bath 3.
before that id only heard trancy and house type techno. so yeah that was something quite different for me. another trip to the same record store and the guy there recomended me - - > Caustic Window - Joyrex J9ii
i listened to it in the store and thought wow.. this stuff is awesome. did not know that it was also by mr. tank engine RDJ.
later on i found copies of: *donkey rhubarb *on *ventolin *saw II
and other such classics. i did not no that such techno was called IDM back then. all that i knew was that it was special and very different to any other stuff that i had heard before.
he seemed to be trying to do something different to what else was around at the time or at-lease something different to what i had access to, to hear at the time.
breaks. balls out hardcore like his mixes of Mescalinum United / mover - we have arived. and yeah.. coz it was vynil you could play it at what ever speed you wanted.. ahh the joys of vynil..
anyway.. he will always be a special artist to me. he changed the way i thought about techno being just dance music to being something fully experimental. soundscapes or just audio buggery. we would not have an xltronic.com without him. and autechre and definately warp records would not be where and what they are today with-out his music.
thank you Mr. RDJ. you have changed my life and im sure many others for the better..
big up : )
