it would depend on the art, obviously... if it was good
enough, and I had enough money, I'd pay lots and lots!

it's kinda weird, but i just cant imagine myself spending
money on art in the form of a real painting of photo, even
though i am pretty obsessed with art in general.

i do invest my money in artbooks and stuff like posters and
i try to visit cool exhibitions whenever i can.

paying lots for prints is indeed strange.

Oh, Daim and Req = nice! I wouldn't mind buying something
from the Daimshop. When will Req be releasing new
musics anyway? When, I ask!?!?

Also, I hope you get a site up soon, Hanal. That would be
nice indeed. Indeed nice.

hah, art always looks better offline! photos are much finer
quality in print, and how could you miss out on the tangible
strokes of a painting?

id pay the $100,000 it takes to obtain an original ansel
adams shot. if i had enough money.

money.

Its hard to explain paying hard money for something that
sits on your wall, but then again, that is how artists
support themselves, and in the end, historians will only be
able to judge our culture by our art and technology. I have
never purchased original works of art/prints, however, have
spent tens of thousands on cd's, and have spent thousands on
books. Actually, I have tried to buy prints of a friends
pictures before, but he refuses usually just giving me the
prints instead. When he sells his stuff (which is super
rare) it goes for about 200 to 300 dollars. If he put his
head to it, he could easily make a living off of
photography.

wierd taking money for his art. Even though he gets

I fell in love with a relief sculture my friend's brother
made. I could not really afford it but he knew how much I
wanted it so he gave me a discount. I still ended up
spending half my months salary on it but it is worth it. I
fucking love it still. The money he got also allowed him to
put a deposit on a room so he could finally move out of his
parents house he had been living in since graduating from
art college. I can easily see how people end up spending a
fortune on art as the right pieces just get under your skin.
Better to spend it on that than gas guzzling machines from
unscrupulous multinationals.

Well unfortunately a lot of this is predicated on what Art
actually is, what its role is, and what constitutes a piece
of Art - a discussion which could last forever. Obviously
there is a multitude of tiers determining what is capital
'A' Art and lowercase 'a' art. Then, we have something like
craft (not necessarily basketweaving or flower arranging)
which is more hobbyist and serves a different purpose. And
then there is illustration too. All of this comes with a
varying price tag and implies the role of the "artist,"
perhaps a curator, the venue, the community, the subject
matter, and maybe even the role of the buyer if there is
one. For high-end blue chip Art its about investment,
criticality, art historical reference, and reconstitution.
There's an enteprise surrounding this that often separates
this distinction miles away from most of the stuff that
we're discussing here.

To answer the original question though, the significance of
a reproduction greatly affects the initial intent of the
piece / creator. With visual art, you're dealing with
scale, resolution, texture, depth, and presence, which you
cannot get digitally. So, you'll never get the same thing
online. I think what you're asking applies more to music in
its recorded form and less to do with actual Art. I think
its availability (online) brings into question specific
issues, though in most cases I don't think its the creator's
intent to bring those issues to the forefront by allowing it
to be distributed digitally. Even "Net Artists" aren't
necessarily concerned with that immediately.

As for the planet-mu dummy, I'd never pay that much for an
illustration. That painting is a piece of 'art,' but its not
'Art.' :P

I dunno about that really. I think Trevor Brown's work can
hold its own. Its more than just the cover of a snares
album, although thats probably all this guy bought it for.

Trevor Brown and several artists out there have the distinct
pleasure of fostering in what is called "The Low-Brow
Movement" in art - Re: Juxtapoz Magazine style roster
artists. Basically, its a group of illustrators /
skateboarders/ tattoo artists who make their illustrations
on canvas and call it 'fine art' and occasionally get
gallery shows with each other, where all the hipsters can
come out on a friday night, talk indie rock, and drink $2
Charles Shaw wine.

*yawn*

Brown is a good painter technically, but I still think he's
lowercase 'a' art. Just like Mark Ryden. Typically, one can
point out these types of painters because it looks like they
grew up all reading the same children's books, watched the
same cartoons, and maybe rode skateboards or dated some
rocker at some point during their youth. Good for them,
they're probably making more money - re: selling prints in
Hot Topic and "artist books" at Borders, though I still
think its becoming dime-a-dozen, predictable, and quite
boring at that.

i'd throw down $5million for the nacmat truk

:)

i judge stuff that i buy (this applies to anything really)
by how personally it resembles or represents me or something
i like.. music, art, or, whatever, i think everyone does...
and ofcourse there are just collectors who wanna gather it
all up...

i had a blowout on japanese wallscrolls 5 years ago so ive
got alot of mamoruou oshii scrolls sitting around in the
closet not doing anything... theyre tight. got pictures of
hot babes holding huge futurstic bazookas, rocket launchers
and pistols. and ofcourse theyve got the bulging breasts
and long puplr hair and belts of ammo going across their
bathing suits...
